Serious Estrogen Dominance

Hi Guys:

Similar questions have been asked, but are older. I have severe estrogen dominance, which is causing chronic pain and swelling in my breasts. This has lasted 3 months now and is slightly cyclical, but never completely resolves itself. I am sick of having huge boobs, they don't suit my figure and they're uber sore (I want to enjoy hugs).

Not to mention that the estrogen is making me crazy. I am a pretty level-headed chick, but I feel like a mental patient who is ALWAYS hungry for stuff I shant be eating (I ate half a jar of peanut butter and felt sick the rest of the day).

HELP!

I am on progesterone cream now 20mg a day, but I was hoping for something a little more long-term. I am seriously considering a double mastectomy (because this issue makes breast cancer screening impossible and I have a family history) but I also want to treat the cause, not just the symptoms.

Dragonfly...any new insights?

Thanks, Dragonfly. My D is good, I supplement daily with 2000IU and play lacrosse, or run daily outside. I eliminated all Xeno-phytos about 2 months ago now, when this became an issue. I now only buy and eat organic, local, grass-fed foods. I don't process dairy, so it's always out. I will consider increasing the Progesterone. Thanks for the blogs. My doc is quite conservative, so his prescriptions are always quite low. I had to fight for the cream in the first place.

Ashley, it looks like you have tried everything imaginable (other than waiting a year or 2 to see if you have gradual improvement - hard, I know). I hesitate to recommend this, so just take this as my personal experience, not necessarily the best thing... I had a full D&C years ago (to resolve a very difficult miscarriage). After the D&C, all my female issues cleared up. Cramps and pms returned to a degree years later (until I found paleo), but never the boob swelling.

I am 26, without kids. I have been paleo for over 3 years now, and cannot tolerate dairy. I fluctuate between low carb and moderate carb paleo, depending on the sport season (I am an athlete). Lately, I train about 4x per week, and mostly resistance, as I am coming off a knee injury.

Ashley~ Yikes to the mastectomy! When you are postmenopausal, you will be happy to have the extra estrogen around--and the fatty tissue in your breasts (and elsewhere) will be a good source.

Reducing overall inflammation (including stress) is your best cancer prevention, IMO.

Hormonal balance is a moving target and so individual and you may want to seek the help of a savvy Naturopath for more support than I can give you here.

And remember that any changes may take 3-6 months to show results.

How is your D3 level?

Have you eliminated all xenoestrogens from your environment?

Have you eliminated most phytoestrogens from your diet?

Have you tried increasing the Progesterone cream to 40 mg/day?

Here's a link to a couple of blog posts that may be helpful (fertility=good hormonal balance!):

How much experimentation have you done around eating/not eating starch?

I'll confess ignorance about estrogen dominance, but I definitely suffered from tender, swollen breasts for much of my life and developed many fluid cysts.

The only relief I've ever found is related to carb intake. During those times when I was counting calories and tended to avoid processed carbs and tubers, there was dramatic improvement. Relapses to binge eating triggered the return of breast tenderness.

Low-carb paleo sees the tenderness go away completely. Reintroducing tubers brings it back somewhat, although eating tubers every other day moderates the effect.

Now that you mention it, I enjoyed 3 luscious beets yesterday and today my breasts are very swollen and tender. And heavy! I'm sure you know what I mean.

I have a few questions to add to Dragonfly:

-how old are you? -have you had children? -what is your diet like? -what is your exercise routine?

I noticed a large improvement in my hormone fluctuations when I finally 100% eliminated dairy.
