Paleo 5HTP? Help!

Answered on August 19, 2014

So I've taken 5HTP for years... Today I'm looking to stock up and I noticed that the one I've taken for the past 3 months has rice in it! Eek! Rice and I don't get along.

Does anyone know of a not super spendy one that doesn't contain rice? NOW Foods and MRM do. Nature's Way lists all sorts of other cellulose stuff on their packaging but I'm not sure what that's made from..

If you buy on amazon you can do a "subscribe and save" so it's cheaper. It is more expensive than other brands but for me that was worth it. Here's the link to what I bought. They have the 50mg too if that suits you. :) http://www.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formulas-5-HTP-100mg-Capsules/dp/B0013OSH2K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344523921&sr=8-1&keywords=jarrow+5-htp

Yes Thorne is also a great and trustworthy company. It is interesting that the none of the professional lines use all those additives!

Yes perhaps you did crusennola! Crabbycakes - that's awesome that 50mgs a day is helping you. I take a lot more than that! (200mg)

Jarrow is one of my favorite supplement brands, though they are a bit more expensive.

I saw their stuff, it was a bit pricey at Whole Foods so I didn't really look at the specs. I need to find a better price if I buy their stuff. Thanks for the tip!

I used 5HTP for awhile thinking that it would help me sleep, but after a few weeks, I think it made me very manic and I stopped. Maybe I already have enough serotonin??

I don't think it's addictive. Most times of the year, I take 50mgs a day. And even if it was addictive, I'd much rather take it than be all fucked up and numb on another pharacutical like I was in the past. My ND knows I'm on it and she thinks my dosages is fine, and she knows I tinker with it a bit. This part year I didn't mess with it at all, amazing what a gym membership can do for sanity... :D

I'm not one of those fad Paleo types, I'm eating this way because I have allergies and senitvities. I eat this way to be pain free and healthy. I recently did a huge overhaul of all my skincare and supplements to remove any potential irritants. Since 5HTP can be a bit pricey, I decided to take it until it ran out, this is my last thing to replace.

Gotcha. Seems like if she didn't notice the rice until reading the label, it must not be bothering her. I just think people sometimes take the "i won't touch it if it's not paleo" thing too far.

Ryan that doesn't mean that 5htp is "addictive" rather it more likely means that you are low in serotonin. If you are still having issues you might want to look into getting an Neuro-transmittor test either by Sanesco Labs or NeuroScience labs.

Jason her concern is not that rice is not Paleo, her concern is that "rice and her do not get along". I take that to mean she has some digestive or other issue when she eats rice so she want to stay away from it.

In addition to Crowlover's suggestions, I would recommend Thorne 5-HTP.

Jarrow has a formula that is free of most non-paleo things (maybe even all non-paleo things?). I believe I bought mine on Amazon. :)

If it works for you, why are you worried about the minimal amount of rice? Shouldn't matter if it's paleo or not.
