L-Glutamine & Chromium to reduce Sugar cravings?

Answered on August 19, 2014

So ive been reading up on L-Glutamine and Chromium and how they can help to reduce sugar cravings, and after 200mcg Chromium today they seem to be blunted (and so does my appetite more than normal?) (in my head or not i dont know)

Does anyone on here supplement with both and how are they working for you to reduce sugar pangs? I plan to buy some L-Glut tomorrow to experiment with alongside the Chromium.

Korion I added the original instructions I got for taking this stuff. You might want to try it as written by Julia Ross and see if it helps.

What effects do you get from l-glutamine, Shari? Chromium does nothing for me too...

@gydle, interesting! My water kefir has the same effect. Sipping a bottle of fizzy water kefir totally satisfies any afternoon cravings.

I started drinking milk kefir and it eliminated cravings in the late afternoon, which was my witching hour. Now when I feel a craving coming on, I drink a 1/2 cup of kefir and wait a few minutes. They always go away.

I take chromium daily but it does nothing for my cravings (although others report good results). L-Glutamine, on the other hand, works well for me. 1/4 tsp under the tongue seems to work like a charm. I wouldn't be without the stuff.

Edit: Adding the test below which is the original instruction I received back in 2003 on taking this stuff. This is directly from Julia Ross's work as I understand.

If you just can't get control over your cravings it may not be all about "will power." You may be lacking in some important nutrients. I learned about this from The Diet Cure and have been amazed at how well they work. Taking the correct dosage at the right times is important to how well they work.

To put an end to cravings for sweets & starches, try a combo of glutamine & chromium. This usually eliminates cravings in 24 hours.

500-1500mg L-glutamine first thing in the morning, midmorning, & midafternoon
200mcg Chromium with breakfast, lunch, dinner & at bedtime

If you overeat to help you deal with emotional pain try adding DLPA at the time you take glutamine.

500-1000mg DLPA (DL-phenylalanine)

For relief in 10 minutes in case of

500mg L-glutamine taken by opening a capsule under your tongue

Glutamine and DLPA are amino acids & are found naturally in protein.
Start with the lowest dosage suggested. If you don't feel relief within 30 minutes add a bit more.
Amino acids should be taken at least 20 minutes before eating protein.

I read that as well. It may be a placebo effect.

For L-Gluatmine, I also read that it can take a week or longer to even see the effects. IT's good for healing your gut, so either way I think it could be beneficial to your diet.

I think the best way to steer off sugar cravings is ensuring I get enough fat into my diet. I notice days that I don't eat enough fat, I am ravenous and want to eat a lot of carbs.

Glutamine can sub for glucose in the Krebs cycle - perhaps this is why it has this effect. Chromium helps people with blood sugar regulation issues (lowers insulin resistance?) - which could help supply cells with glucose.

Perhaps it's the cell starving for glucose that causes the cravings (it wants a hit). Very speculative, but interesting.

Taking isolated supplements to prevent normal and natural cravings isn't paleo, or a good idea. I wonder if raw vegans take supplements to prevent and fat cravings.

Never noticed a decrease in sugar cravings from l glutamine. I take 5 to 10 grams a day on an empty stomach for colon health.

I started taking chromium and L-Glutamine 2 wks ago after reading all of this. Unfortunately, I have to report that neither my sweet cravings, nor my overeating or general cravings have diminished at all.

I started taking L-glutamine & Chromium after reading Julia Ross' book " The Diet Cure. I highly recommend it and 5 days after starting with these two supplements, I experienced NO sugar cravings and blood sugar levels balanced. I am not as hungry as I used to be and have lost the desire to binge on sweets. It's incredible and a miracle!

2 days in using a 200mcg supplement of Chromium and its not only killing the sweet sugar cravings but a total desire for any food period.

since my last meal around 44hours ago ive only managed to eat 8 eggs scrambled with some butter, with a HIIT session then following, after that i took todays 200mcg chromium and hunger and well, everything associated with it have vanished.....

any one know why it seems to be so effective at killing hunger in general?

I used L-Glutamine to curb sugar cravings when switching over to paleo. I would get a massive craving in the afternoon and a spoonful of L-Glut powder killed it immediately. I used it daily for a month and it seemed to work great.

As I mentioned above, water kefir appears to soothe any carb cravings I have in the afternoon.

My primary appetite control, however, has been large leafy salads at the beginning of my main meals--which I am fascinated to find includes good sources of L-glutamine and chromium (romaine and celery.) Hmm.
