Has anyone taken Maca root?

Does any one take maca root? If so I am curious what is your gender, how long have you taken it, the amount, if it is raw, and what type of results you have seen.

Oh and if you add it to other foods... it has a very distinct flavor that I cannot seem to pair with anything just right, except cinnamon... because i add Cinnamon to everything XD

Hey report back after you stop taking it for a while? Just curious to know how you recover your adrenals, I have been through something similar.

Can I ask what type of BC you were taking? Did you stop taking it when you wanted to start maca?

It is funny since I also found various sites where people were using it to lose weight. It is supposed to balance hormones, so maybe its effect just depends on which way you were inbalanced in the first place.

I tried adding a tsp of maca root to my morning shake for a while in the hopes of incorporating another "superfood" into my diet. It definitely made me put on weight and it also made my nipples insanely sensitive (sorry if this is too much information)....basically they felt like when I was pregnant and nursing and needed to nurse right away or else! I know it has estrogenic properties which I can attest to first hand. Several times while I was taking it, I thought I might be pregnant (in spite of being on the pill) because that is what it felt like.

I quit it and got rid of the extra 5 lbs or whatever it was. Curiously, I later found a whole forum devoted to women trying to increase the size of their asses which advocated taking maca root for just that purpose.

Female. When I started taking maca I was having PMS and severe problems with period pain (pethadine injections for pain). Sadly the maca just gave me a very upset GI tract and severe, disabling migraines that wouldn't respond to painkillers. Took 3 days to ease off. Tried maca again during peri-menopause for hot flashes but got the severe migraines and upset GI tract again. Tried maca during menopause and got the same results with no benefits. I'm done with trying maca. It's a poison to me.

I'm a 51 year old female, I originally started taking maca to stave off menopausal symptoms (it's coming). I love the burst of energy in the morning, and around 3 pm when it starts to ebb.

Then I noticed my muscles are getting really defined! My 20 year old daughter is a lifeguard and she was impressed (and had trouble keeping up when we worked out together). Her words: "You do this work out every other day??" lol.

I'm taking a maca product designed for peri-menopausal women, and there are formulations for post-menopausal and fertile women from this company also. I have to go on my first break in a few days, and I am sure I will miss it.

I am a 22 year old female. I took maca in the capsule forms for about 2 weeks. I noticed a huuuuge improvement on my depression. I felt as though it completely subsided. Also, my severe anxiety went down almost completely too. That is proof right there that psychological issues can be due to hormonal imbalances, since maca is a natural hormonal balancer. Ever since I had mono 3 years ago, I have suffered with extreme fatigue; and maca seemed to really help with it as well. The only thing is, is that there is pros and cons to every supplement you take. With how great it was working for my moods and energy, I didn't like the way it made me look physically. I noticed weight gain, and I felt almost more bulky. As a women I'm not trying to get bulky. I did some research and I found that maca increases testosterone, which I definitely do not want to do that! So that being said I stopped taking it; I want to do more research and find the best maca before getting back on it. If you don't care about the physical changes that may occur to your body then I say go for it!!!

Hi there,

I am a 28yr old female and have used Maca powder for about two years now, with a few breaks spanning over a couple of months here and there. I keep buying it because I am obsessed with the flavour - it taste like cookies, but I end up frustrated with this addiction as I'm sure it is making me fat, well not fat but increasing my curves so to speak.

The below points are just my experiences over the past two years that have been "different" for me, I can't prove that they are directly related to the Maca, but I will share them and people can draw their own conclusions.

Compared to my measurements of 6 months ago, I have increased by 3cm only on my bum, hips and chest (thighs stayed exactly the same). Noticeably my bum has gotten bigger (but in like a perky booty kind of sense) which some might think is OK, it is just making all my tighter clothes not fit so its not what I want. In over two years I have increased 5-7 kilos in weight. I consume anywhere from 1tsp to 2tblspn a day.

I have noticed my strength and vitality have largely increased - I was doing a lot of cross-fit and boxing and really felt that this stuff made me perform (note - I was doing this before the weight gain too, I know what muscle weight is!). I am have switched back to more cardio at present which is why it is still surprising those areas are larger in size.

My endurance has shown amazing improvements from previous years, despite an inconsistent effort in training of anywhere from 2 to 5 sessions a week, I incorporate a run into the mix every few months and am surprised to see I can still pull a 14kms run out when I need to..and its not a struggle!

My sex drive has gone from not wanting it at all to through the roof (yes everything is hyper sensitive) - which is not helping me as I am currently single (doh!).

My periods were erratic at first, I probably struggled with this for the first year of taking it, my cycle was around 5-6 weeks and could be really heavy. It is now back to 4 weeks and much lighter. I track mine using the period tracker app so I was able to keep record of where they were at.

My skin over the past two years has gotten increasingly worse, what was just one blemish on my chin and around my cycle turned into mild acne. Now that I'm sitting down to write this, it is actually like a bit of a realisation. I ended up with small bumps across my forehead, then they started down my cheeks and all the while having the big ones come and go on my chin. No amount of facials, dietary fixes etc would clear my skin - i.e no wheat, no dairy, no nightshades etc. I have admitted defeat where my skin was concerned and have been on accutane to get rid of it. 3mths in - looking good.

I will also say that a 32yr old male friend of mine was suffering with his bedroom performance and I suggested he try it. He reported back a few months later that it really helped him. And he also commented that he noticed an improvement with his training at the gym.

I am certain I am recovering from adrenal exhaustion and when taking this I feel good, but I will not buy it again because I don't think it is overall putting me where i want to be. I love being strong and fit - all my mates at the gym think I'm an absolute machine, but right now the size of my bum and my skin are more important to me. Shallow I know!

So that is my very long winded answer about my personal experience with Maca over the past few years... Sorry! Hope it is useful to anyone out there considering it :-)

I take approx 1/4 tsp (tiny amount as I don't like to overdo supplements) of Raw Maca Root powder in the morning sprinkled on my 2 poached (runny) egg yolks with 2tsp raw coconut oil, rocket leaves, 1/3 avocado and pinch of himalayan crystal salt. The flavours blend really well according to my tastebuds!

I have really messed up menstrual cycle from taking the pill for 8 yrs up to age 23, and have found they are more regular since taking maca, however I find that a no-starch/no-refined sugar/no-cooked fat eating plan really helps with my cycle, mood, energy etc anyway.

I think it may be useful during the first week or so of this kind of eating plan, where your body is switching from carb mode to ketosis mode, since the associated low energy levels can be crippling...!

I took maca powder in moderate doses in smoothies for a while but didn't notice much apart from one day where i took a fairly large amount & definitely got an effect from it, what i'd imagine viagra to be like if you know what i mean, really i wasn't any more horny (don't think thats possible!) but my erection was HARD

I'm not sure if it had a synergistic effect with that particular smoothie or was just a good batch but i've tried it again & never been able to repeat the effect

Im kinda done with the whole 'superfood' thing of maca, goji, spirulina, chlorella, barley grass etc... and now just prefer to just eat good normal superfoods, no more smoothies, i may incorporate more in the future though

It tastes umm.. not-so-hot, so I prefer the maca tablets, the unfortunate thing is that it is sold abroad (in the US especially) as a male sex enhancer, which is not really what it's all about. Studies have been done on menopausal women showing that it greatly helps in depression, and depression studies are being widened. maca from http://www.biomaca.fr it benefits are also that it helps you focus, stay alert (but not in a jittery caffeine way) and be a bit more positive.

I took the raw powder form in smoothies. Noticeable increase in energy and mental acuity. Only negative side effect is if I take it too late in the late it disrupts my sleep.

I am female in my mid 30's and I have been using Maca powder for over a year. My hormones were all out of whack and my energy was very low from recovering from Adrenal Fatigue and healing my hypothyroidism naturally. it has been a wonderful addition to my diet! Im a holistic health coach and widely recommend it to clients to help with balancing hormonal issues. Most are wonderful with it, but I have discovered that some have an adverse reaction to it. I'm not sure yet the connection between the bad reactions so I just recommend each person try for themselves.

Male, prescribed maca by a naturopath. Brand name: Natural Health International, RevolutionPro.

I took the capsules for a couple days and developed a very bad headache and rumbles in the gut, which went away shortly after discontinuing the maca. I waited for a couple days and restarted the maca. Intense headache and GI distress again happened. I stopped maca and back to normal.

I haven't touched the stuff since.

WOW! I am very surprised to see the wide range of ideas on the subject!!! I started taking the raw, organic, powdered maca root about a week ago.... I started hoping for more energy and a balance in my hormones (my birth control has made my hormones all out of wack and I am sick of it!) Also I am trying to gain lean muscle and I have read that Maca root increases strength. so far I have had lots of energy and a very good mood.... so I am going to continue taking it... although I know it is important to cycle supplements so I will take it for 4 weeks and have a week off.... or for 3 months and a month off.... I will see how I feel after four weeks and go from there.... thanks everyone for your help!!!!

Yikes, I'm getting discouraged reading these comments. I have had it a few times in the past in a smoothie or raw chocolate bar, but have just recently starting taking a maca root tincture in the hopes of helping with adrenal issues and pms/heaving periods.

I took it during my last period and very soon after got intense cramps and a migraine- I'm not sure if this was a result of the maca or not. My sister takes it and feels great, and has experienced a decrease in PMS symptoms/period problems.

I'm going to keep trying it, and monitoring how I feel. I take 30 drops 1-3x a day. I recommend the tincture because the taste of maca powder can be hard to take, and it overpowers many of the foods you add it to. You can find maca root tincture at Whole Foods and most health food stores..

What is your reason for taking it?

I'm a female. I started taking the gelatinized form a few months ago and the only thing I have noticed from it is that it threw my otherwise extremely stable menstrual cycle into a whirlwind of irregularity. I'm not sure what, if any, benefit it has provided but I am nearly certain that it whacked out my cycle, which makes sense considering its hormone balancing reputation.

I am a male. I've used it in smoothies. I tried both raw and gelatinized. Both were intolerable. Cramps, gas, and a weird BO that wouldn't quit... not for me.

I'm female. I used it in smoothies for a long time. Mostly just gave me a little extra energy but I didn't notice any other differences. I bought it in powdered form. I also used cinnamon in the smoothies to mask the flavors of the maca and some of the other weird powders I was putting in there.

Try adding raw organic cacao powder in a smoothie with maca, almond butter, a banana, and a dash of cinnamon.

I quit with the smoothies in favor of real food. You could try a maca supplement, in pill form?
