Anyone take Pantethine to lower cholesterol?

I've been seeing a new Doctor who is a CrossFitter and mostly Paleo. After some recent blood work, she suggested I try taking 600mg of Pantethine 2x day for about 3 months to see if it lowers my cholesterol some. Don't have my exact numbers as they (Dr's office) are mailing them to me, but my total cholesterol apparently went up (over 300) since my last visit back in March 2011 -- I have been Paleo for about 1.5 years, am 58 yr old male in pretty good health and weight. VAP Test was done fasting. Not overly concerned about my cholesterol numbers as the last time (and this) my ratios were very good, Triglycerides very low, and had a Coronary Calcium Score CT with a perfect score. Will probably post some of my new numbers when I get them just for feedback.

Anyway, any harm in taking Pantethine? I guess even though Dr adheres to Paleo she still is uncomfortable with high numbers.

Thought butter is an ideal paleo food -- i.e. a good source of fat?

Were I you, I'd cut out the cream and butter completely first and see where you end up before pursuing novel supplements to counteract their effects. Butter and cream are essentially anti-statin drugs.

Thanks. Hard to tell if it is exactly the same. Saw one article on Internet that suggested pantethine is a form of pantothenic acid and easier to metabolize. I guess even though my Dr. is a Paleo adherent, her medical training she still wants to make her hedge her bets some. Haven't seen any real downsides to taking it, so may try a 3 month trial.

I cook mostly with butter (and other fats). Not a huge cream consumer, although do eat Fage full fat yougurt (which has cream as one of main ingredients), sometimes mixing in heavy cream and when I do have coffee (1 or 2x per week) I use heavy cream.

I don't know if there is much difference between taking Pantethine or taking Pantothenic Acid (B5), may be others could comment,

But PHD is okay with Pantothenic Acid (B5); "....and pantothenic acid are harmless in very high doses, and extremely cheap..." http://perfecthealthdiet.com/?p=147
