Super (pancreatic) enzymes and digestion

I read Robb Wolf's book but it's still unclear what he suggests about the super enzymes.

In the book he says to to go up to 5 capsules (until you feel an hot sensation in the chest, more or less).

But does this only apply to Betaine HCL or also Now Foods super Enzymes (the brand Wolf mentions in his book) which contain some Betaine as well (around 200mg per capsule)?

Moreover, are the super enzymes to be taken just before or after the meal?

I'm feeling better since using the super enzymes, although some nights I feel still bloated, like if I needed more than 1 capsule (but I don't want to harm myself).

I tried also betaine HCL only with no result at all. So I know the super enzymes are ok, but would like to know more about the dose (if I can increase) and when taking them.

My doctor doesn't recommend using enzymes, but he doesn't even know what a Paleo diet is. We're in Europe folks.

Thanks for answering.

Right, ox-bile is what's needed to digest with fats, Betaine HCL is only going to help with protein digestion. And yes you want them both before a meal, not after.

One more thing.. I take the enzymes soon after the meal. It seems I'm wrong though and should take them just before the meal, right?

Thanks a lot for your answer. I tried betaine hcl for months but with no results. The day I drastically reduced fats, I started to feel better. I was eating a lot of fats and almost zero carbs. Once I reduced fats to the minimum and added back some some veggies, little fruit and yams, things improved very much. Along with pancreatic enzymes. Especially my hypothyroidism, IBS and insomnia.

Yes, it applies to Now Super Enzymes as well (it has Betaine HCL, as well as oxbile) You'd take them with a little bit of water, right before you eat a meal containing protein and fat.

You won't harm yourself, I usually take 3-4 pills right before eating - more if I'm eating a larger meal, less if not. Avoid the tablet form, they're not as effective as the capsules.

They're very useful for those who have had their gallbladders removed. If you're in the situation where you have gall stones, here in the USA, doctors will immediately rush in to have it surgically removed. Very bad idea, don't let them unless there's no other choice. These are very useful in helping digest fat.

You can also use them if you don't have a lot of stomach acid. There's also something called digestive bitters you can take to stimulate stomach acid, if that's what you need.

I've tried another brand from VRP, but it had no effect - you can tell by the shape of your eliminations.

Google the Bristol stool scale if you want to find out, you'll want to see type 4's. Types 1-3,5-6 indicate that fats aren't properly being digested especially if they float.
