Sunburns and Bug Bites, Welcome to Summer!

What's the paleo-solution?

Sunburns right now I use Aloe Vera direct from the plant. I take Vitamin D daily and have a good tan, but get burned some days when I don't pay attention to how long I've been outside.

Bugbites... I eat Garlic daily. Virtually all our cooking includes garlic. I get devoured by Mosquitos in the afternoon. What else can I do to neutralize the bites and prevent future ones.

Yeah Matthew - LOL - people will avoid you too if you rub garlic all over your skin - do you mean fresh or powdered garlic (just curious - not planning to try) ...

I never heard that about whiskey! One more reason to occasionally indulge my Jameson's habit.

If you rub enough garlic over your skin almost everything will avoid you :)

The only things I have used in the field outside of deet (because I didn't know any better) that seemed to actually work were: rubbing the garlic, rosemary, and basil over my skin. Its easy to carry, and light weight.

And, this is a bit controversial and probably not paleo/primal, but when you drink whiskey your skin emits unfavorable smells that the bugs avoid.

I've heard coconut oil (and other saturated fats, probably) are good for sunburn, both taken internally and applied topically, and for both prevention and healing.

I think I heard that ash prevents bug bites, too, but I can't remember where. And I'm too new to Paleo to have had a chance to test these yet.
