Why am I craving sugar so badly?

I've been about 85% Paleo for three months now and have really never felt better but I know my potential to feel truly great has not yet been reached. Lately my major issue has been really intense sugar cravings. I crave chocolate, ice cream, and baked goods mainly. Occasionally I'll have some dark chocolate (80%) but it doesn't seem to help. I've been having issues incorporating red meat into my diet. I've really never eaten red meat in my life and don't know where to begin. So I'm wondering if maybe I'm not getting enough fat. I've also read a little about magnesium being too low and also protein. Any suggestions?

For breakfast I usually have greek yogurt and one cup of coffee. Lunch is generally eggs with vegetables and bacon or a salad. For dinner I have roasted chicken or pork and vegetables. Snacks are usually nuts or small amounts of fruits.

As a sugar addict finishing a whole30 tomorrow, I can attest you need to go 100% paleo for at least a month to get this garbage out of your system. Dark chocolate almost seems to sweet for me at this point and the cravings are virtually gone. As far as red meat goes, just eat it. Don't make it complicated. Simple is key.

It's known to be addictive, and is inflammatory. Cancer cells love it. So go right ahead...

Sugar is evil.. At best, it's a once in a while treat. Every week is far, far more than we are adapted to.

Can you update your post with a bit more information about your typical meals and portions? It would help...

I agree with warren D. Try 100% paleo. It's difficult at first, but worth it in the end. I found when I went full paleo my cravings disappeared.

Try eating your carbs at night and perhaps allowing yourself vanilla ice cream. The fat will blunt the sugar a tad. Eating carbs (other than vegetables) during the morning and lunch can lead to carb cravings.

In addition to what Eric said, above, I'd add some more fat and protein to the breakfast.

I've (N=1) found that my sugar/junk food/crap cravings are significantly decreased throughout the day if I fat-load in the morning. For example, a typical breakfast for me would be 3 hard-boiled eggs, 4 bacon strips or some ham, and an avocado. If I eat this at 9, I can go until 2 or 3 p.m. before the hunger hits the "EAT NOW!!!" stage.
