weird drop of energy after dinner

Answered on September 12, 2014

Hello!

Yesterday I had dinner with a friend at a steakhouse (cause it's just meat). I alowed myself some alcohol, but I made a mistake. I had a small vodka lemon, because I forgot that the lemonade in it contains sugar. Oops, I thought an didn't think about it much longer.

After a good dinner I decided to walk home (about 40 min. walk) through cold weather. I felt good and had enough energy. But suddendly after about 25 min. I felt a strong energy drain. I felt slightly dizzy and my legs felt very shaky. I made it home but I didn't feel good at all. At home I ate some blueberries and blackberries, because I thought maybe it's some bloodsugar issue.

my question: what could have happened? I eat paleo for 10 days now and felt good so far.

cheers Marc

Jeez, HuntingBears, get off the low-carb hating kick. Low carb doesn't work for YOU, but others thrive on it. If he isn't typically experiencing problems eating low carb, then there is no need to bash his diet.

'Yes, losing weight is one of the main goal' of course, I should have guessed! If you want to lose weight stick to Mark sisson's myopic primal blueprint, if you want to get healthy add in the tubers and even some white rice, forget about low carb. Low carb long term will fuck you up

Yes, losing weight is one of the main goals. And so far I don't cut on fruits and veggies. Ok, I guess I will eat more carbs (like sweet potatoes?) and continue to pass on bread, sugar nd stuff. Thx lisa!

No need to jump to legmes, but in my opinion, roots, tubers, and squashes provide a great source of paleo-friendly, dense carbohydrates.

marc paleo doesn't mean low carb. it's true that some people who follow a paleo diet also do low carb, but it's not necessary. unless you're trying to lose weight and think low carb is what you need (personally i don't think it's necessary at all) then why cut out healthy carbs like fruits/veggies/tubers? especially if it's subjecting you to severe energy shifts. the point of a healthy diet is to make you feel good.

Roth, a small vodka with a substantial steak dinner is not likely to exert such a strong CNS depressive state by itself. Hell, the CNS actually goes through a hyperactive rebound state after metabolizing the alcohol. In its extreme form this is what causes insomnia and hand shakiness in alcoholics. The alcohol certainly could have contributed (in fact, probably did) but was probably a confounding factor to something else. You don't have a shot of booze with dinner and suddenly feel like a weak kitten an hour later JUST because of the vodka.

You drank. You walked far, and in the cold. You were overly tired when you got home.

What does your diet look like? I'm supposing you are doing VLC or LC paleo.

It does sound like you had a hypoglycemic event -- which alcohol can make much worse, regardless if the alcohol has sugar in it or not, funny enough. When I was experimenting with low carb paleo back in the day, this happened to me once, and it was horrible. I had to have a friend drive me home from where I was having dinner -- and I only had one glass of wine!

I do not think that LC paleo is healthy long term for everyone/many, so consider a) stopping now or b) not drinking.

Fatigued after high protein meal, maybe low stomach acid? Try hcl

Beef is highly insulinemic so that could have caused your hypoglcemia (if that's what it was). I was surprised when I looked it up, following a similar experience. There's a chart here http://web.healthorize.com/gi_insulin_index.htm

yeah, if you're in ketosis or follow a low carb diet and you consume even a moderate amount of carbs, especially simple short chain carbohydrates like alcohol and simple sugar, you're going to get a serious energy drop. just like conversely if you were following a very high carb diet, a small amount of fat could throw your energy levels out of whack.
