I have been paleo for over three years and was quite paleo during pregnancy as well. My son is now 8 months old and I started having major sugar cravings while breastfeeding when he was about 4-5 months and I am still breastfeeding about 6 times a day and I have major sugar cravings. I have never experienced this before since going primal. Fruits don't cut it I crave chocolate and conventional desserts. Any idea what's up?

One of 4 things: (1) you need more carbs, as your caloric needs have gone up. Try more starchy carbs. (2) you need more fat, as the major sign that you need fat is actual sugar cravings. (3) you need more minerals like magnesium, which chocolate would indicate. Or (4) you are starting the fun hormone roller coaster ride back to normal hormones.
For 1-3, I would try tracking food on a site like cronometer for a week. Compare your macros to something like this: http://perfecthealthdiet.com/the-diet/. See if you have any glaring deficiencies in minerals and vitamins. Good reference here: http://perfecthealthdiet.com/recommended-supplements/.
As for 4, well, it will pass. :) Are you still nursing at a high enough level that your fertility has not returned? Most women have it back anywhere between 5 months and 14 months. That transition can be a little crazy.

Diane Sanfilippo, the bestselling author of Practical Paleo, freshly included a sugar detox guide for breast feeding mom's to her popular 21 day sugar detox challenge. It's a resource for moms who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who are feeding kids while on a sugar cleanse/getting rid of sugar cravings.
I did the challenge myself 2 times and intend to do it once every 3 months to cleanse my body and last week I got happy news for my husband :)
