These are the sugars i'm referring to in no particular order:

  • fructose
  • glucose
  • lactose
  • galactose
  • maltose
  • sucrose

You're probably right about the fresh fruit, gilliebean. Molasses has such a strong - I'm not sure how to use it. What I do know is that it has a very high mineral content, which is obviously good. There are also different types of molasses, so that has to be factored in. In short, not sure. Anyone else know more?

I would say that sugar from fresh fruit is better than cane sugar. Since you're including honey and maple syrup, where would you place molasses?

A challenge! Ok, here goes. Raw honey Maple Syrup/traditionally produced cane sugar Sugar from fresh fruit White sugar High fructose corn syrup I'm not sure which is better, maple syrup or good cane sugar. There are also lots of types of cane sugar, so that's a bit difficult to answer. Honey has some medicinal qualities, so I'd put that first. Unfortunately, I can't stand the taste of it. HFCS is from the devil.

Glither, perhaps you should answer the question that you're suggesting he ask? How about editing your question to rank those things like honey, white sugar...etc?

Good night, sweet prince; you should make this post your epitaph.

I stand corrected, to a certain point. Granted it has no effect on insulin but it does have a definite effect on triglycerides, which the other sugars also do. I'll edit out the word "exactly."

I would say...

Most harmful = fructose.

Then = sucrose (it's 50% glucose, 50% fructose).

Then = glucose.

Then = Lactose, galactose, and maltose. They all get processed by enzymes into glucose in the end.

Instead of ranking ???fructose ???glucose ???lactose ???galactose ???maltose ???sucrose

why not rank things like

???honey ???white sugar ???traditionally produced cane sugar ???maple syrup ???sugar from fresh fruit ???high fructose corn syrup

and so on. Surely you don't want to lump HFCS together with the fructose found in fruit, or the fructose and glucose from raw honey together with the fructose and glucose in HFCS? Than's just wrong.

Most beneficial is fructose. I don't agree at all with Paleos' position on fructose anymore.

Glucose is the best because it can be metabolized directly by muscles. Fructose in certain amounts is good as well because it refills liver glycogen very efficiently. From what I've read galactose is similar to fructose(as far as metabolism goes) but its not sweet so it loses.

I would rank them all equal. They all do the same thing in the body when metabolized. You can't get around it. And that also goes for starches which are just strings of sugars.

Glucose is the main form of energy. Taking excessive of it is a different story.
