Post Sugar - Sugar Cravings

Hi all,

Just wondering whether anyone can explain why the only time I intensely crave sugar is just after I eat something sweet? The only other time I crave sugar is after meals, a small square or two of 85% dark chocolate usually fixes things, but the cravings are no where at all as intense as the odd occasion immediately after I indulge in a small piece of cake. My brain practically forces me to have a second piece before I feel slightly sick from the sugar overdose!

I'm about 90% paleo (about 20%/25%/55% carb/protein/fat) with carbs mostly non-starchy vegetables with 1-2 serves of fruit a day - mostly berries. Apart from fruit the only other time I eat sugar is when I have the 85% dark post-meal chocolate (~20g max per day which contains only ~4g of sugar). I'm basically dairy free apart from a tiny dash of milk in my morning coffee. I am also fairly active, weight training 3xpw and playing basketball 2xpw.

It could be your gut bacteria the one that thrives on bad carbs asking you for more. Don't feed opportunistic bacteria - and chocolate is the perfect fermentable substance for them.

You could have a look into Dr. Jack Kruse's website (OK I know that he is very questioned here but I like his writings a lot and think that have a lot of truth on them at least). He has a lot of explanation related to this, but there's plenty of info about this kind of issues on other sites, I even experience it myself quite often.

Basically, it seems to be that the sole fact of eating or even thinking about something tasty (sugars most likely) could trigger an insulin response, and if you are not leptin and insulin sensitive enough you could be not signaling soon enough your brain about the fact that you have just eaten the right amount of food and want to eat more. That's a oversimplification, it's really pretty complex thing. See also 'food reward'.
