Is Jaggery paleo?

I know it probably causes a lot of the same insulin spikes as sugar but I was wondering if Jaggery was paleo? Kind of like honey, not too bad sporadically and in small amounts. Thanks!

How dogmatic about paleo are you trying to be? Ooga-booga caveman paleo or whole-food functional diet paleo? As part of a whole-food functional paleo diet, a little jaggery doesn't seem awful. I'm not a fan of bastardizing ethnic foods to necessarily fit into an artificial diet framework.

So, three statements to consider:

  • Try to never add excess refined sugar to your diet
  • Jaggery is refined sugar
  • Jaggery is much less refined than other sugars, and contains other non-sugar substances, too.

So, I give a soft "no", but also a "ehh, maybe sometimes if you're making a baked faileo treat for yourself."

Look at this guy making jaggery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Making_Jaggery.JPG). Enough said!

Otherwise no. It's clearly just sugar with an insignificant amount of micronutrients.
