How to use cinnamon

Answered on August 19, 2014

What can you use cinnamon in besides candies and sweets? I just found out that cinnamon has phytochemicals that help regulate blood sugar and I'd like to start incorporating cinnamon into my diet. But I can only rarely eat deserts, so what can I do with cinnamon (that does not involve sugar or flour)?

That sounds really tasty. I already put cocoa in my chili, kind of like a mole sauce but I bet cinnamon would be good also.

Worth testing. Though I eat 50-200g of sugars daily mostly in the form of honey and fruit on a cut, and have been having great success for well over a year (lost 24kg).

I definitely don't use any sweetener in my sweet potatoes or squash. In fact, if you add some cinnamon & then some salt & pepper the salt will make the natural sugars pop.

I buy greek, full-fat yogurt at the local farm store. I like to mix in an apple and about a teaspoon of cinnamon. Delicious!

I add a little cinnamon when I make chili. It's the mystery ingredient that makes people wonder "What IS that?"

Just go to America. Every time you inhale you get a mouthfull of cinnamon: I reckon they pump it into the air-con.

Cinnamon is also used to make pho, Vietnamese noodle soup. The broth by itself is wonderful on a cold day.

I use cinnamon with (hot) coconut milk. I'd add cocoa and drink it as a warming beverage. Or turmeric and use it as a curry sauce.

Stifatho (stifado) - a Greek meat casserole which has cinnamon in it. I had it in Parga and thought it was delicious. Here is a link to a recipe from Corfu - it has a cinnamon stick; the version I had used powdered cinnamon.

I also use it in a delicious Kidney curry - one of my favourite meals!

Coffee, protein drinks, or buy some 00 caps and fill them up.

In case you haven't researched this far, a fair warning. Cinnamon is a natural source of Coumadin. I believe that more than 1.5 tsp a day is considered potentially dangerous.

Also, splurge on some with high oil content. It may seem expensive, but a lb will last quite a while.

I include cinnamon in mashed sweet potatoes mixed with honey. Makes for (part of a ) perfect post-workout meal. Haven't tried it without honey, but it's worth testing if you're afraid of sugar.

I love cinnamon in coffee! You can also use cinnamon in Indian, Moroccan and Middle Eastern spice blends.
