Hack my cravings for processed/high sugar foods when sick

I've come down with a whopper of the summer cold that's been circulating in our area and besides bringing a stuffy head, horrible cough and body aches, this little lover brought along cravings for highly processed/high sugar foods (the first cravings I've experienced since starting my personal Paleo journey a few months ago).... like total crap foods, boxed cereal, pop tarts, pastries.

What gives? Does being sick cause a deficiency of some sort that would cause these cravings? Does feeling like poo just bring back old demons? My personal theory is that it might have something to do with taste (or the huge lack thereof at the moment)- if you can't taste does a metabolically deranged body revert to wanting foods that are unnaturally flavorful?

And lastly... do you have any favorite things to eat to get you over the sick hump? I don't feel like eating anything (besides the cravings for a box of pop tarts... and that ain't gonna happen), but I know I need to eat something.

Thank you!

sugar cravings are not uncommon when sick. sugar is easy for the body to burn for fuel, and in a depleted state the body like easy.

Try eating fruit and lowering protein intake.

up the carb intake and lower fat, and keep moderate protein to keep muscle mass intact while your sick(i assume you dont workout when sick) and "if you dont use it you lose it" theory, the carbs will actually aid in the recovery, get clean carb sources, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, broccolie, whole grains (if you tolerate it), etc. thats just my take on it

My unscietific explanation, but anecdotal reason for "junk food craving" during periods of sickness is because bacteria and/or viruses use glucose for fueling their party inside your body, much more so than fat or protein, because of its ease of use.

If you can hammer through the cravings and take in some quality saturated fats and moderate protein, MY belief, and again, it's all anecdotal, is that you can speed up your "get well" time by effectively starving the little buggies of their preferred food source.
