Extreme sugar craving after nap

Answered on August 19, 2014

Every time I take a nap during a day (lets say 1-2 hours), I wake up having so extreme cravings for sugar that there is nothing I can do about it except eating tones of chocolate, cookies, or pretty much everything I find.

What is the possible physiological basis for it ? I didn't check for hypoglycemia but what would trigger it.

Otherwise, I don't have such intensive cravings and if I have them, 50g of black chocolate or 1 ice cream do the job.

Your fatigue sounds justified! I don't have any kids, but I do have three talkative, high-energy cats. I wonder if your blood sugar dips after naps or something? If you figure it out, though, let me know! :)

Good thoughts. However, its not the case with me. I was suffering very long time from post meal sleepiness, particularly after lunch during my job time but low carb, low wheat diet eliminated that. Now I nap when I don't sleep enough (I have 1y old baby and vocal cat).

good idea for coconut oil. I don't usually sleep during the day, its rare ocasion but still, it always happens. About not keeping those things in the house, I have a wife, which is paleo a lot but can't live without chocolate and ice creams and she even thrives on it - when she removed it, her weight started going up .... ?!

Oh man. I have had that same thing forever and have always wondered what is going on physiologically. If I don't give in right away, it passes. But if I do, I tend to overdo it.

Judging from your profile picture, I'd say the reason for your cravings is genetic. You are clearly related to The Cookie Monster.

Don't keep those things in the house. Keep a jar of coconut butter or coconut oil by the bed. When you wake up, eat a big tablespoon. Or, sleep longer at night/don't take naps.

Add: Sorry, I don't know why the naps bring on cravings, just have suggestions on stopping the problem.

I wonder if the same thing that's causing your cravings is causing your naps?

The thing is, I have the exact. same. problem! I'm starting to notice a pattern here, though: I find that if I overdo it on carbs (sweets in particular, like fruit or dark chocolate), I'm out like a light, and I wake up with cravings that perpetuate the cycle.

For instance, yesterday I passed out on the couch with the TV blaring and all the lights on (which is very strange for me, as I sleep with an eye shade and earplugs typically) and woke up only long enough to shove a dark chocolate almond butter cup into my mouth, then zonked out for another three hours. However, right before my nap, I had overindulged in several fresh figs and had grazed on one of my friend's coconut meringue cookies.

Thoughts? :)

Sounds like hypoglycemia. Not getting enough sleep at night is going to exacerbate this. http://www.drbriffa.com/2009/03/11/why-might-afternoon-nappers-be-at-greater-risk-of-diabetes/
