'Digital devices deprive brain of needed downtime' thoughts?

What does everyone think about this? With the ubiquity of technology in our day and age I believe that this is something that deserves a very good look at. From my own personal experiences I've figured out that physical inactivity != rest and relaxation. If I'm using my PC or smartphone it's just impossible for me to wind down and ever feel truly relaxed because of the constant overstimulation that we all go through on a day-to-day basis. Shutting off the internet alone doesn't always seem to help either, although it definitely makes matters exponentially worse. I also find it really bizarre that I become a lot more irritable, tired, restless and scatterbrained if I consume too much technology (more than 2/3 hours at a time, even with short breaks) at once.

Have you made any observations about how you consume your technology? Have you found a sweet spot where you can leverage the advantages technology brings without it consuming your day altogether?

Good question. I have had similar experiences but would love to see some solid answers.

Most people seem to be constantly running from the opportunity/need to think their own thoughts. They listen to music when they walk or exercise, they watch movies while they commute, they watch TV while they eat, text and screw around online when out with friends, and more. Doing nothing and the absense of distraction seems to scare them to death. They are raising their kids this way also, bringing portable DVD players and video games to restaurants. Whatever happened to sit down and shut up?

I'm not saying that we should stop using technology, but I think that people need time on a daily basis (or more often than that) to turn everything off, stop doing stuff, and think with their own brains.

Most people have some kind of problems that they are dealing with, but instead of taking time to think it through and come up with solutions, they prefer to avoid this discomfort by distracting themselves with technology or something else. It is less unpleasant in the short term, but they don't get anywhere or solve anything in the long term. The future will belong to the people who think.
