Can't get rid of stomach!

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hi everyone. I have a quick question. I can't seem to get rid of my stomach. I'm 5'6 130 pounds and my arms and legs have gotten thin but my stomach just won't seem to get any flatter. I do a mix of cardio and weight lifting. How much more weight do I have to lose to see it go away? I'm just frustrated! Thank you!

Meghan, im sorry to oversimplify things, but you need to lose more bodyfat to lose the fat covering your abs. Have you ever heard of the gold miner who stopped digging 5 feet before pay dirt? Dont be that girl and stick with it, lose another 5-10lbs of fat and you will be where you want.

You need your stomach to survive. Please do not try to get rid of it.

In all seriousness, looking at your height and weight I don't see a problem. Could it be that you have unrealistic and unnatural expectations for your body?

Have you checked out T-Tapp? have to google it;my tablet is being uncooperative for linking. She has a move called Organs in Place that will shrink the belly, how quickly depends on how long your waist is (really.) Lots of people get really great results with her exercises and they don't take very long to perform.

< sarcasm > Your stomach is a necessary organ that is required for food to nutrient digestion and survival. You cannot get rid of it.< / sarcasm >

If you have access to a female-specializing athletic trainer, you may want to talk to them. Possibly someone at your school (if applicable) or gym. Belly fat is often the very last body fat to be accessed and burned away. But if you've already made progress, don't give up!

Crossfit was my answer. I struggled with this problem forever. If I have an ounce of fat, it shows in my tummy. With the short workouts (WODs) that constantly challenge your body, I finally got the fat to move. The answer is not hundreds of sit-ups. Secondly, and to go along with the above, weight training is vital for us women! Not only will you feel, better, lose weight, and gain curves....but you will be surprised to find that overhead squats are the best thing to tone that entire core!

Could your belly be related to either bloating or your posture? If you are eating something that causes bloating (dairy, FODMAPs, etc) it can look like you still have quite a bit of belly fat to lose. Ditto if you have an anterior tilt to your pelvis (think Donald duck).

Not having seen your belly fat it's hard to comment but your height and weight seem totally appropriate - don't forget that your body needs fat and cholesterol to maintain hormone balance and if you drop below an appropriate percentage you can mess up your menses/fertility. (Not sure if you are at an age to care about that). Because of that women often store fat right around their uterus and ovaries (easy access - no pun intended). That being said I would get your fat percentage checked and then go from there. Also, you can try applying a tens unit to your abdominal fat just before working out. We do something similar with needles and electricity in acupuncture to help loose weight in specific areas. I'm not sure if it will work as well with tens units but it would probably help.

it would help to know what your diet is like and how long/how often you are exercising.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm complaining but I'm just not too comfortable wearing a bathing suit yet. I was curious about how to help it at all because I've tried everything. I'm not trying to lose more weight I just don't know how else to.

My legs and butt are the last place I lose weight from. I am 5'8 and 125lbs and still wish my legs were smaller. It is hard to say how much weight you would need to lose to be comfortable with your stomach but it may just be a matter of losing another 5 or 10 pounds.

For me, my legs are the last place I lose weight, even when I try to focus on working them out a lot and running. I think spot fat reduction is not really possible so it may just be matter of losing a bit more and hoping that your body wants to get rid of some from there!
