Coco Polo Chocolate? Stevia-sweetened 70%

Answered on August 19, 2014

What are your thoughts on Stevia-sweetened chocolate? I tried some today and ended up eating an entire bar (about 360 calories, whoops!). It was delicious...but is it ideal? Is it better to have like 80% dark chocolate with actual sugar in it? Or is the Stevia okay?

Here is what I ordered: http://www.cocopolo.com/

Ie your always better to use moderate amounts of actual sugar, than use artifical sweetners (unless you have a will of steel, which you probably dont if your using substitutes anyway)

Any non-caloric sweetner increases hunger more than actual sugar. Studies of artificial sweetner soft-drinkers found they put on more weight than those who drunk sugared soft drinks. Its because the actual taste of sweetness provokes production of insulin in the pancreas. The pancreas even has its own sweet receptors. Insuling makes you hungry, and if you spike insulin without meeting it with calories....: hunger and food binges.

I third it! What are you referring to Flip? I suspect Rachael would have also eaten the whole bar if it has been sweetened with sugar.

@Flip -- What do artificial sweeteners have to do with either? I second @BoneBrothFast's question about your binge effect reference .. I haven't heard that before now.

Also what "binge effect of Stevia" are you referring to? I've never heard of this binge effect. If anything, Stevia is likely to get your sweet tooth under control.

I conclude tha ending up eating an entire bar maybe the drawback of sweeteners. You really cant fool your brain into taping it with artificial sweeteners. I'd far rather have some 85% Lindt dark chocolate, and eating the sugar in it than endig up eating an entire bar and probably someting more along tho road due to the binge effect of the Stevia.

How do the nutritional stats compare? If you are getting less sugar without artificial replacements, then what is the drawback of eating more chocolate? Besides the exta caffeine and increased binding effect :)

I make my own "chocolate" with coconut oil, raw cocoa powder, and stevia. i think it keeps me from binging on high sugar chocolate bars and it taste great. Stevia is a great natural sweetener, I've used it for 10 + years. It does not raise your blood sugar, so I cannot really think of a downside to chocolate sweetened with only stevia...
