Navigating the healthcare system for heart disease

Hi all, 52 year old female here. Total cholesterol 330, bp normal, blood sugar normal. Mostly paleo for 2.5 years (carbs have been sneaking in all over the place-but I'm getting on top of that!).

Within the past 8 weeks my family history for heart disease has gone off the charts into the danger zone. Open heart surgery on one bother 46, the other sudden cardiac death at 49, no previous history. Father previously had 2 heart attacks. Mother high blood pressure, aunt high blood pressure.

I am in the process now of getting doctor's appointment set up with my GP to talk over whatever tests should be done for my heart. I am very wary of doctors and the whole low fat diet and statins that they are probably going to advocate for. Is there anyone out there that has sucessfully navigated the American healthcare system for heart disease issues?

Thank you
