New York City Paleo-hackers! Where do you buy food?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hey New York City Hackers, care to share your favorite places to buy food? Restaurants/produce stands/farmers markets/etc...

  • Commodities Natural Food Market - in the E. Village on 1st Ave. It's a little Vegan/Grain centric, but they have GREAT produce at low prices, they carry Jones and Niman Ranch meats (not grassfed, but better than SAD), and a host of other great natural foods.

  • Greene Grape - Park Slope or Ft. Greene, I think? My friend told me about it but I haven't been yet. Apparently all the meat is 100% grassfed, and carcasses are broken down on the premises. Sounds promising, even if only car-accessible.

  • Whole Foods - They're kind of wishy-washy on the issue of supporting the traditional model of food distribution and farming though?

  • Union Sq. Farmers Market - of course! But it's so intimidating! Any suggestions about favorite days/booths?

I'm still so new to this, so I'm still trying to find all my reliable sources. I REALLY want to find a good source of RAW MILK!

  • Come on New Yorkers! Where ya at?!

I feel like I'm missing something. Why is this an issue? I'm new to the idea of "raw dairy", but curious.

I'm in Greenwich Village, and think a meet-up / trip to the farmer's market would rock.

Futureboy, that's on many a corner in Manhattan! But special attention to Kwik Meal at 45th & 6th ave which sells real lamb instead of processed wheat-containing gyro meat. It's accordingly pricey though.

Definitely will - the people who run the group are super helpful and answer a lot of great questions. I am not sure if there is a way to send a private message on this (pretty new) but if you can send me a message, I will send you the email address of the contact who got me involved!

Check out http://tfc.myrealfoods.com/ - I just found them (as my answer goes into more detail) and they deliver raw dairy and have great prices on all sort of milks, cow, sheep, goat plus meats. You have to pay an annual due but the prices are way better than those I have found online or at the green markets. Best, Jackie

I've been thinking about the Park Slop co-op. My girlfriend and I recently almost moved out to Cobble Hill. I've also heard really good things about the Meat hook, but I haven't checked them out yet. I usually see pretty good stuff at the Union Sq greenmarket, but you gotta go early to get anything.

if you want a source of raw milk you will have to email people (like me) because anyone who is a member of any of these clubs (I'm not saying I am ;P has to sign an agreement not to mention them by name).

Guys, please don't mention the raw d*a*iry stuff by name. Only that you know about it and people can privately email you for more info. A lot of these clubs have been extensively persecuted by the state and have already had to change their drop-off points, websites, farmers, etc. and have lost business because of it.

I just found this amazing group through the NYC Weston A Price Foundation - their website is http://tfc.myrealfoods.com/. I just joined and they are hooked up with 4 producers of raw dairy, but you have to pay an annual dues ($55 or $25 if you volunteer 5 hours during the course of the year) and one of their farms has A2 cows (Dutch Belted)! I am picking up my first order next week. They have deliveries all over Manhattan, and the other boroughs. They also sell all sorts of meats at ridiculous prices. I usually order from grasslandbeef.com but these prices, especially for roasts and marrow bones are ridiculous.

We're trying out their heavy cream, sour cream, yogurt, milk, some marrow bones and some eggs for starters, but I am super excited. They have glass bottles which you can return for a refund. I grew up on a farm with raw milk and I never liked milk after leaving the farm, so this is a big deal for me. They also sell butter, cultured or non-cultured, salted or non, plus goat and sheep milk and meats, pork, everything is pastured, grassfed, the works!

The only trick of it is that you have to sign a contract stating that you are only paying the farmer for his labor, NOT for the raw dairy. This is their cute way of getting around legal issues. Whatever it takes to get raw dairy in NY - delivered no less!

as a parent with a busy schedule, i can't bring myself to start a park slope food co-op membership. my free time is just too precious. is that weird? i live a few blocks from it.

for convenience i go to union market for butter, heavy cream, and pastured eggs. i don't think their meats are grassfed but still better than the key food, and i only eat about 3lbs meat per week. (open-range is not necessarily grassfed right?) i buy conventional berries which are already so expensive. arugula. dark chocolate. that's about it. key food for white rice and coconut milk.

i also go to the green market but not often. i don't buy a whole lot of fruit and veggies in general.

this is a great list of other places though. i really need to start buying quality grass-fed beef. i'm excited to try all of them!

ETA: fleisher's opened up near me. i like the place a lot and the prices are comparable to union market. everything is pastured.

TJ's on the corner of atlantic and Court has 100% grassfed ground beef for 5.99 per pound. cheapest i've found. their steaks are NOT grassfed though.

Carroll Street Green Market on Sundays has a 100% grassfed beef purveyor. Only the heart, liver, and chuck roasts and short ribs are what i would consider affordable, though. Maybe actually you should stay away, cuz i don't want you buying it all before I get there!

The best option would be to join the Park Slope Food Coop, though. Their beef selection is seriously awesome. The prices are incredibly cheap. Course, you have to join and work at the Coop. I did this for a few years and then my schedule went to hell so i only have the memories now;/

And yes the Meat Hook out in williamsburg has really good prices for their animals. I don't know the provenance of them but they do a lot of butchery on premise, etc.

  • Grand Army Plaza has the biggest one in Brooklyn.
  • Forest Hills has the biggest one in Queens.

Commodities carries grass fed beef now! A little pricey, but in a pinch it works! I bought a pound of ground beef there yesterday for $8.15.

EDIT: Just found The Meat Hook on Frost St., between Leonard and Manhattan. http://the-meathook.com/
