Before going paleo I was always chewing gum or eating hard candy. Now I don't know what to do..I want to chew gum or something along those lines but its not paleo. Any tips or ideas that could help me get over this?

It also causes you to swallow excess air which leads to bloating and air trapped in your intestines. Not pretty!

How about xylitol sweetened gum? Small amount of a pretty tolerable sugar alcohol that kills bacteria in the mouth and helps remineralize teeth. I get mine from epicdental.com . No aspartame or other artificial sweeteners.

You might want to check this thread: http://paleohacks.com/questions/126603/sugar-free-gum-and-gluten#axzz1yjcsJSkv. I've been looking for Glee gum because I like having something to chew on when I am driving for long periods.

The broken souls of your enemies.

Or, I chew on tea tree chewing sticks, although I have seen licorice chews sticks too (these look good) although I haven't tried them yet. The tea tree ones are basically flavored toothpicks, which get the job done. They have a strong flavor, but you get used to it, I guess. Kind of a mix of peppermint, cinnamon, and tea tree oil. I kind of like it, but that's me.

fresh honey comb if you are able to find it. I've heard that was what people chewed on before gum was invented. It's very tasty and I quite like the waxy texture.

When I quit smoking I carried around toothpicks. While I'm sure I looked like an asshole it helped with the mere habit of having something in your mouth to fidget with. Thankfully I was able to stop that. It's pretty childish to have to be chewing on something in your partner's face. I'm sure it annoys people.

Whole "sweet" spices are a good alternative, especially for the effect on your mouth and your breath. Some examples: cardamom pods, pieces of cinnamon bark, fennel seeds.

How about.. parsley to keep your breath fresh or anise seeds? Or sunflower seeds in the shell? That would definitely keep your mouth busy so would crunchy veggies cut up ready to go. Good luck!

We have this phrase in our language "to chew the fat". I assume it comes from an actual thing humans have done, have you tried chewing fat? I haven't tried it myself, but I'm sure it would give your mouth the same workout gum does.

the tea tree toothpicks are good, but according to a surgeon I did some work for, they are easily swallowed and it is unpleasant when they poke numerous holes in your bowels on the way out. Be careful and don't get too crazy with them in your mouth. What primitives actually chewed on is pine sap. My experience has been it is rather tough to get used to, and should be diluted with some other benign and tasteless additive.

I have had the same problem, and I just started drinking herbal tea instead when I was bored.

Interestingly too, when I had gum again after about a month, it made me feel awful and really bloated, so now I stay away from it, and also no longer crave it!

See, my problem is that I'm a chronic snacker. I snack when I've got nervous energy or when I'm stressed. What I WANT to eat are walnuts, but if left to my own devices, I'd eat 50+ walnuts in a day. INSANE fat and calories. So I try to drink water but that's not enough. Gum has kept me from snacking, and I chew A LOT of it. I need to find some alternative because I'm sure the chemicals and the faux sugar spike are a bad thing....

It's not that attractive and maybe some people will take issue with the potential chemical consumption, but when I'm nervous and need to chew something, I chew a plastic straw.
