Addding fat source to green smoothies?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I'm confused from reading contradictory advice. Should I add a fat source to my green smoothies to help absorbing the nutrients or is it unecessary?

I usually add 1/2 an avocado or 1 tbsp coconut oil to my green smoothies.

Adding coconut oil would keep you fuller longer.

Avocado is green AND fat. Both are good. Adding fats will only help absorb fat-soluble vitamins, however (A, D, E, K), and only because it primes your body for fat-absorption.

I recommend it. Coconut oil too.

Fat adapted keto folks like fat in everything so you'll get different advice from them. It will contradict the advice from carb burners as you say.

I like to add coconut butter to my smoothies. Sometimes it doesn't entirely blend and you get little dots of it ~ if that bugs you, find another.

I think extra fat in the smoothie is what keeps me feeling full longer.

And the avocado in a green (well, just 1/2 an avocado is enough for me) is really delish!

I like to put coconut milk in my smoothies, and not the low-fat kind.

In the spirit of bio-available spinach, I cook 6oz in 1.5oz of coconut oil. Then, I pour the entire contents of the pan (spinach & oil) into a 10oz of greek yogurt, 2 frozen banana, maybe a few frozen strawberries.

BTW, did I mention how much I love my VitaMix!
