Since going Paleo have you noticed a difference with your sense of smell?

I have 7 days left after a 30 day stint of strict Paleo (Whole9 challenge) and I am amazed at how much my sense of smell has kicked in.

For example, we took the kids bowling yesterday and I could SMELL the pizza and cookies the family next to me were eating. It was crazy.

It seems like the smell of all of those baked goods and carb laden junk foods emit a certain smell that is almost irresistible. It's crazy. Thank goodness I have stayed on the straight and narrow - I'm too far into the 30 days to give up now - but man I have got to stop putting myself in situations where there is garbage all around me, cuz it's tough to see it and then to SMELL it. lol

Have you noticed a chance in your sense of smell or one of your other senses?

Grace - definitely. I had really annoying eye problems that were solved together with my blood sugar. I know hypoglycemia causes blurry vision, so that might be it.

My eyesight has also improved drastically - from extremely far sighted to only slightly nearsighted. My doc chalked it up to being too studious and reading in dim light, but I think it's just because I'm off SAD and eating healthy.

My sense of smell has improved, and I can smell perfume on someone from a couple of metres away, that I'm sure I didn't notice before. Soooo strong.

Congrats on almost completing your Whole 30. I am 11 days in but caved and had a cinnamon roll on Saturday. So I'm starting my counting over...... I haven't noticed a change to my sense of smell yet. But I have already noticed that I feel better and don't have the foggy headedness.

I can smell rancid and/or synthetic cooking oil from across a restaurant.

I'm fairly certain that your smell has not gotten better, but that you are not encountering these smells as often and when you do, it is a lot more potent.

Looking back on before I started eating healthily, I remember the bowling alley and pubs and such smelling the same, but I now associate it with food that I no longer eat rather than the bowling alley itself.

My sense of smell and eye sight have both improved. The improved smell is a big issue. I can't even stand to go to the movie theater anymore since I can smell people's hair, perfume, food, and clothes (like detergent smells). The worst part is my office desk is like 5 feet from the office restroom door. Then again, smelling all the spring flowers so strongly I can almost taste them has been pretty awesome. I should go into the perfume industry and make some great natural scents!

My eye sight improved one full point. My eye doctor was a bit confused as to how that happened. I know there is some variation for people, but not me..I have been a negative -10.+ in both eyes for at least 10 years. Now I am a -9.

All I can say is stick with it - that smell makes me sick to my stomach now.

However, my sense of smell has definitely improved; I think all of my senses have to some degree, eyesight especially as well.

I feel sharp, like a hunter.

I notice that my sense of smell for food is more acute when I am hungry. Have you been hungry a lot during your Whole30?

I don't necessarily want the foods that I smell, just that I notice the scents of them more. Apparently I am a 21st century hunter-gatherer roaming the mall.

My sense of smell has been more acute when I am hungry from the time I was a little girl eating the SAD.

EDIT: see previous thread @ http://paleohacks.com/questions/5930/old-senses-seem-new-sense-of-smell#axzz1XAsi6Mnj

FURTHER EDIT: I also noticed that my sense of smell became EXTREMELY acute when I was pregnant. I could tell from across our yard whether the glass of tonic water my husband was holding in his hand had gin in it or not by whether I could smell the juniper berries. ;-)

Its unlikely paleo is the reason,i think its down to increased hunger which is stimulating all your senses as the brain tries to get you to eat.

I dont know if paleo is the cause, but the recent time I have noticed that I cant stand parfume. When Im at school for example, I cant stand to sit next to a person who smells parfume. I feel sick of the smell.

People smell different now. Each person seems to have their own fragrance. Mostly pleasant. I am apalled by the strong odor of the laundry detergent that I recently bought--can't wait until its gone. However the longer I have it the less I smell it. Not good. Don't want my senses dulled. We have roses. One called "Mr. Lincoln", a deep crimson, makes me swoon.
