Sleep deprivation

What are your best hacks for sleep deprivation?

Let's say you sleep for 7-9 each day and get used to it. And then you have to go for a business trip with a night flight and only 4 hours of sleep. Then, you need to have a highly productive way and need to feel energetic and happy. And then sleep for 4 hours again, just to repeat it one more time. And after that you get back to norm.

But what would you do during these two days? Whatever it is, meditation, exercise, additional supplementation or anything else, share it!

Practically tested hacks are preferred ;)

See if you can get a Doc to provide you with Provigil (medafonil) for these situations. I've used it during exams/finals weeks. Also, l-theanine for before bed when it's only 4 hours.

Caffeine -- takes 45 minutes to get your system going, and then will last for about 2 hours. Half life is 4-8 hours so be careful.

Power nap -- a quick 20 - 60 minute nap will give you a lot of energy.

Workout -- Don't go too hard, that will wipe you, Body weight HIIT style get the oxygen to the muscles.

Fat -- Fat helps, your body loves to use fat for energy and nutrient absorption, especially if you are fat adapted. Do go for big meals (that will put you to sleep), but an avocado or a handful of nuts just enough to get your body geared up to use teh fat!

Meditation is my most effective defense. I do TM, though other forms of meditation are certainly helpful.

A drop or two of peppermint essential oil also does wonders. On top of that, do all you can to eat healthy whole foods and drink lots of water.

Good luck.

I used to work two jobs. Up at 3am for a 4:30am opening shift at Starbucks, home at noon for a quick nap, then 3pm-9pm at my other job (tutoring). I went through 2-3 of these a day: quick, more portable than a cup of coffee, easy to eat even while bike commuting, and they pep you right up. Also much cheaper per mint than coffee.
