Recovering from Trauma? How to Metabolize Adrenaline

I got hit by a car last night while riding my bicycle. Sadly my bike is a mess, but I'm fine (or will be). But after getting home and cleaning my wounds I tried to go to bed at my normal time. Unsuccessfully. So my question is this: How do you recover from a major adrenaline dump as quickly as possible? Is it possible to speed up adrenaline metabolization? I was tossing and turning for hours.

Thank you all for your kind responses. But to clarify, my question is posed from a clinical standpoint because I am not trying to deal with the PTSD, but because the situation sparked genuine curiosity. Is it possible to hack adrenaline?

interesting idea - I've tripped and fallen running and that shock is a horrible feeling. I don't feel the pain from the fall for quite a while.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident. I ride everywhere and I've been hit also and its scary.

I agree with VB. What you need to do is not be so clinical about it. Accept that it has happened and that you were scared. Talk to someone about it or just get some support from a loved one. I don't think this is a paleohacks 'adrenaline dump' issue but rather a trauma processing issue.

EFT (aka "Tapping") is a simple acupressure technique that has been used successfully in the VA for PTSD and many other smaller traumas.

I have used it for many things, including a fall down some steep stairs. It really helped my body release the shock.

Oh my Gosh. I am so sorry. I really do not know the answer to your question, but I hope you are going to be okay with time. Thank God you are alive and well. Don't worry about the bike, it could be so much worse...

An idea - try talking to someone. It always helps me, when I talk to others about the incident. I don't know if this is a medically sound idea, but it usually helps me. Can somebody give you a hug?

I realize this is a very old question, however I feel the need to post as I have some experience in dealing with this kind of event. I recommend anyone who had an car accident, or a was immobilized by some event they could not control, to seek out a experienced Somatic Experience practioner. It is a way of treating trauma, as they call it, which is very respectfull towards a evolutionary / ancestral view of such events, rooted in neurological psychology and clinical experience.

Very sorry about your accident, glad you are ok though.

I have been in some riding accidents, in one of them death was really near ( I was trampled underneath my horse), I was ok straight after it, chased my horse down the road, got home, went to the hospital for X-rays etc.

Went back to my moms house to spend the night, that evening I became a complete mess, shaking, scared out of my mind, not sleeping etc. It lasted for a couple of weeks, and the only thing that helped was feeling safe with my family. It was scary not having control over my feelings and body.

I think that doing something to cut off the reaction from the sympathetic nervous system would be helpful, getting the parasympathetic system on, acupuncture, massage, a spike mat etc. maybe?

The problem from stress comes not from the stress itself, but from the nervous system staying in the sympathetic state for too long.

Have you tried getting your mind totally concentrated on something else? WHen I cannot get my mind calmed down I go online and play really tough sudoku games. It usually helps a lot. Kind of redirects all that mental energy...

I suppose it's worth a try. I know when something like that happens, though, you're just amped for a while. I am so glad you are okay! You can make up for the lost sleep over the weekend.

I'm very interested in the question, because I suffer from slow adrenaline metabolization. This is quite problematic when having a hefty but intersting discussion in the evening, or doing sports, because it takes HOURS for my body to calm back again after such things, and it usually results in loss of sleep.

The only way which works for me is drinking a few alcoholic beverages or avoiding sports and social interactions in the evenings altogether, but I really like to sport and to skip all the social things is not fun either. :(
