Paleo Ecovillage

Answered on August 27, 2016
Created September 16, 2011 at 3:21 PM

Does anyone know of an existing/soon-to-exist Paleo Ecovillage?

If not, does anyone have any interest in forming/joining one?

Ecovillages are small, at least partially self-sufficient communities that largely have private dwellings but communal farming and wildnerness areas, as well as sometimes communal guest housing. There's a big veg*n contingent in these, though I've come across a few omnivorous ones--nothing very big, but big isn't always better. Size seems to range from half a dozen individuals to several dozens; location is usually rural, but there seem to be clusters within walking/cycling distance to college towns.

As I telegraphed in a recent Paleohacks question, I'm ready in the mid-term to flee the city, in search of a healthier--and naturally, more paleo--lifestyle. Not only do I want to eat right, but I want to be in a healthier, lower-stress environment where my peers are not working to tread water 12 hours a day and where you don't have to stay up until 1am every day in order to have a social life.

While we're still young!

I'd rather chill in my neo high rise apartment, drive around in my neo Porsche and hang out with my skinny girlfriend with the neo metabolism (she can eat anything). Alas my diet has to be paleo lest I become mistaken for a blimp

Not exactly the same, but there was a recent discussion on Paleo intentional community. Similar to this idea maybe? http://paleohacks.com/questions/144376/what-principles-are-important-for-a-paleoish-intentional-community

re: bureaucracy/niggling, i have a low threshold for this sort of thing. i would favor as decentralized a structure as possible. i'm spending Columbus Day Weekend in an ecovillage outside of Ithaca, NY, so i'll get an idea of how realistic my vision/Patrik's "Lord of the Flies" vision is. (despite?) being from the SF Bay Area, I actually have very little tolerance for groupthink, cooperatives, overbearing societies, etc.

I agree. The cohousing communities I'm familiar with are very paleo-compatible without being paleo-specific. People who value real food (however they describe it) tend to have more in common than not, even if the exact details differ.

Having lived in the Findhorn ecovillage for 7 years, I imagine that cortisol and trigs would go sky high for SOME folk. Community living is not necessarily low stress! Think hours of community meetings to decided if it is OK to grow legumes or not...

Water can be an issue, just get closer to mountains and you will have running streams. It's open range country and there are lots of raoming cattle that the cowboys need to water frequently - (yes there really are cowboys still, on horseback, SEXY!) You may have to get those HUGE water containers that people put in back of their trucks to fill up in town. There's mountains out there, so if you want to get some snow (and elk) just head up there. Nice thing is you get to go home and sit in the sun and watch the snow melt off your car. Colorado is great too.

Zev, you want all that winter? Go to the southwest, like the four corners region. Get some altitude though so you can have a better growing season. No one cares what happens out there, believe me I lived there. Lots of wide open spaces for sale cheap, LOTS of sunshine and all sorts of critter to catch and eat. Winter sucks.

I like this concept. How rad would that be to start our own little village? The challenges, obviously, would be to figure out how to actually make it work logistically with what we would be dependant on. (like would we fully 'live off the land' or would we have designated deliveries from local farms, or would we BE the local farm...etc)

Would it be in America? Would it be somewhere in Eastern Europe? Or maybe New Zealand. Maybe somewhere obscure so that silly laws would be less of an obstacle. (keep in mind I live in CA, land of laws).

It sounds dreamy and fantastical to "start fresh", to make a new world and sort buck the authorities and heavy hand of all the things that have taken humans off course with regard to health and wellness. to take our knowledge and understanding and allow our offspring to stand on our shoulders and get a real strong head start leap.

I bet my trigs would plummet, my HDL would shoot straight up like a beanstalk, and we could close out the Hack Jack thread as being no longer relevant. haha. One can dream, no?

I've been part of 2 fledgling co-housing groups and lived & worked in the Findhorn eco-village for 7 years.

Loved it. Hated it. Left & ended up moving back. Left again and am very happy living in a small city, without needing to go to meetings every week.

Utopian ideals don't tend to last long once you actually engage with the community building process. It can be surprising to find out how difficult it can be to get along with like-minded folks!

There is lots of info available if you are truly serious. Be aware that most groups can take 4-8 years before they are even ready to build (if you are wanting to start with raw land.)

Co-housing can be a good option if you want to create a structure that allows folks to own their own house & be able to sell it to a (community-approved) buyer if they need to move.

Some links that may be useful.

LOL! This may be true elsewhere, but I don't know if the raw vegans & vegetarians at Findhorn would agree!

I agree. The cohousing communities I'm familiar with are very paleo-compatible without being paleo-specific. People who value real food (however they describe it) tend to have more in common than not, even if the exact details differ.

I have been wanting to start a nude paleo "hippie commune" as my friends refer to it for years.

I mean this is my ultimate goal in life. I'm 23 and I need to grow my funds a bit more, but all I'm working towards in life is to do this and have people to do it with.

We should so start planning a paleo eco-village. This is such a good idea. Lets make the dream come true! It had to be in a area where you`re allowed to hunt all year long. In Norway there is a limited period of time during the year where you are allowed to hunt ,unfortunately..

the hunting window is limited in most/all areas of the US, as far as I know. which is fine, because you can still have livestock, etc. thanks for your interest, NG!

Hi The_Blanket, I just answered your question "Where's The Ideal Paleo Homebase?" Hope to connect soon re: a paleo ecovillage or paleo intentional community.

Oops... I searched for "intentional community" instead of "ecovillage" when looking for questions on this. Didn't find anything so now there's another related thread going

We started a facebook group on the topic as well.

There's definitely some interest!
