Hi. Quick intro. I am a grad student in Nursing school. School has been challenging and rewarding, yet not as challenging as trying to stay awake. I was diagnosed with having Narcolepsy when i was in 8th grade and have battled with trying to stay awake ever sense.

Recently, I have been reading where other Narcs have improved their cognitive abilities by changing their diet. SO my goal has been to cut out refined carbs and increase my protein intake. So far, with Paleo style eating I have had great results, but I still struggle with meal planning & knowing what to buy when I go to get groceries. It has also been good for my workouts. feel free to offer any suggestions...

I try to eat frequently if I can, because I figure bigger meals are to my detriment. What I have found is that pretty much every time i something, within minutes I can sense my level of consciousness and mental alertness decreasing., I have cut out all grains, but I still have that change in consciousness when i eat something. Thanks for your suggestions. With my current diet change

Thanks for the suggestions. I am currently trying many of these of things, primarily eating meats with a variety of veggies and avoiding grains. Shopping is getting more fluid, but it seems like it will just take some time and then I will be more efficient at planning and coming up with better ideas.

Do you have to eat frequently, or does doing so help with the narc? Hard boiled eggs, jerky, nuts, etc. are good snacks if you're pressed for time. Coconut products are favored here.

Have you thought about an elimination diet to help with the narc? Basically remove one category of foods for a period and see if symptoms improve. Ex. removing dairy, nuts, nightshades. There are places to find an exact program for this experiment. Good luck.

The basic jist is this...avoid grains, grain/seed oils, chemically processed foods, and refined carbohydrates. Get meat, preferrably whole cuts and organ meats. Get a wide variety of vegetables and spices. Get a little fruit. Get some nuts. Definitely get pastured eggs. In any of the above, go for organic if possible, but not necessary, and go for pastured meats if possible. Shopping for paleo foods is easy since most are on the periphery of the store. Then if you are having difficulty coming up with meal ideas, do a quick google search for paleo recipes and you will find thousands. I like to pick a couple of ingredients I have and do the search for recipes with those ingredients. Good luck!
