Hack my sickness

Answered on September 12, 2014

For the first time in over 2 yrs I am sick and I have caught a stomach bug. My boys have had it between the 2 of them for around 2 weeks. I have always been lucky in that I've never really picked up the sicknesses my kids get and we are never sick at the same time. It crossed over to my fiance on Sunday. My symptoms started late last night.

My questions are:

First of all, why did I even get sick to begin with? I've been taking 10-15k iu VitaminD per day along with 3600mg Omega 3 fish oil capsules and my other supplements. I've been doing a lot of IFing lately to try to break my weightloss plateau. My diet has been clean.

Is it a known phenomenon for mothers to not pick up the sicknesses of their children directly? If that is the case perhaps my fiance was the bridge.

I would replace oils with whole foods, easy to get omegas from fish.

So much Omega 3 because I've not yet made the transition to pastured grass fed meats.

@Melissa, it Alternate Day Calorie Restriction improves asthma (along with all the inflammatory markers you'd expect) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17291990

I think that animals fasting during an illness is much different than practicing IF for the purposes of weight loss.

Well on the brighter side this seemed to be just a 24 hr sickness and its been well over 2 yrs since I have had anything wrong. Guess I shouldn't complain much.

but people in healthy traditional cultures do get sick. After all, millions of Indians died when explorers came to the New World of infectious disease. Also, while we are eating paleo, we are still living in dense sedentary environments. When foraging people have been moved to such places, they get infections even if they eat the same food they did.

in animals fasting helps gets rid of colds. I don't know if they have done a study on humans.

I second the IF connection. Fasting = stress = increases susceptibility to infection.

Diet and lifestyle can only protect you so much. At some stage the amount of any virus/bacteria in your environment will be more than you can handle. Everyone gets sick!

Well, everyone gets sick at least very occasionally. It would be totally unreasonable to think that any diet or supplement regimen would literally make you invincible.

Having said that I hope you feel better soon, stomach flu is the worst.

I have 2 Tbls of Apple Cider Vinegar in some water, that always seems to help right away (and I repeat this a couple times a day). And I take lots of extra probiotic tabs, or Kefir, or sauerkraut, always seems to kick it fast. I think now we are more exposed to more things, more illness to combat on a daily basis. But it seems taking the right steps can help shorten the illness.....

Personally, I doubt it was the fasting. Once you are used to it, it's not very stressful really.

Do you eat fermented foods, eat organ meats, take Magnesium, have sufficient Vitamin K in your diet?

If there is a deficiency somewhere or an imbalance your immune system will be stressed.

Why so much Omega 3?

It could be all the fasting. My toddler gets sick any time she eats poorly (or very little). You may not have given your body enough to fight it off with.
