Magnesium supplement made me very sick

I tried a magnesium supplement recommended by my naturopath, yet she's on her honeymoon right now so I can't contact her at the moment.

The reactions I received 2 hours later were quite violent:

-nausea

-fever like symptoms with no temperature

-joint cramps

-stomach ache

-and insomnia that was so bad I stayed up the entire night and finally fell asleep at about 8 in the morning for a few hours...

Has this happened to any of you? I topically apply magnesium oil, I can only handle it on my lower abdomen and feet otherwise it stings, but I haven't really noticed a difference applying it topically for one month...

My naturopath thinks I have a magnesium deficiency (I have no money for tests, but my parents insurance for some naturopath visits) but if I can't handle the magnesium pill then how do you get the proper amounts?

might depend on the type of magnesium used?? different types tend to have different effects ie citrate tends to be a bit laxative, and malate might increase stomach acid... maybe that gave you the symptoms you experienced? no clue im not a doctor or a 'naturopath' but might be better taking them with meals spaced throughout the day, or just try a different form.

There are quite a few brands of magnesium-rich bottled water. Absorbing it that way will allow you to take it in smaller amounts and check if it's causing you any trouble.

I take Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) baths 2x a week. I use 2 cups per bath. Not sure how much magnesium I'm getting, but it feels very good. Maybe it would be gentle enough to not irritate your body.
