Why do I keep getting sick?!

Why do I keep getting sick? I supplement with c, d, b complex, probiotics, lysine...I eat super clean. No added sugar, low carb, little fruit, high fat..I Exercise regularly. But I've been sick multiple times this year and even though allergy season is here now I'm sick once again! I used to have allergies pre paleo and my first allergy season after paleo i was fine. But this year it feels like my allergies are back. started with a sore throat then stuffy and runny nose. Then sneezing and now I'm coughing and can't fall asleep. Is it possible I'm still sensitive to pollen and should just wait this out? The last time I got sick my coughing was so bad I went to the ER. They said it was bronchitis. I work with children, could I have picked up their germs? but wouldn't I have developed an immunity to their germs by now? I'm a teacher of many years and paleo for 2.5 years.

Anyone else experience a similar difficulty?

Recently I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue AND gluten sensitivity... the both of those things keep my system pretty much shut down and I can just be barely around someone with a stomach bug and it's now mine.

Have you ever had an HIV test? Have you ever had a colonoscopy?

How low carb are you?

It's possible that your mucus production has been impacted, leaving you vulnerable to infections.

I have been the exact same way, and the only thing that's helped me is taking allergy medicine, as mentioned in an above post. Allegra does great for me, and I'm very prone to sinus infections, etc. That and plenty of rest! I know it's hard resting, especially in today's society, but even if you can go to bed earlier after a hot bath, nothing works better for me!

If it's viral and cold/flu, elderberry (aka Sambucus) will work nicely. You can get it as both dried herbs in pills and as a syrup. The syrup is great for sore throats, though some are sweetend with pure fructose or other nasty stuff, so read the label.

If it's bacterial (some respiratory infections are bacterial) things like oregano oil or olive leaf extract will work, though be very careful to take only a few drops to prevent a Herxheimer reaction (bacterial die off where you get very sick from all the bacteria, including your gut flora dying off and releasing all their toxins at once.)

If it's allergies, and this time of year, it likely is, there's not much to be done. Supposedly the local honey in your area can sort of help against it, but in practice it doesn't always work.

Could you please post your diet? List everything you eat in one day.

I never get sick. And I never get headaches. I have been teaching full-time for many years, and now I am teaching part-time. The only time I get sick is when I eat something sugary or sweet, such as an ice-cream or chocolate. And as a teacher you always get tons of them. The funny thing is, the last time I was on my sugar binge, I did not even get sick - but I was taking shots to lower my immunity... Yes, my immune system is in over-drive because my gut flora is impaired. However, I am able to take pre-biotics now (something I could not do before) and I am so happy!

I can tell you pretty much the menu of "not getting sick" for me - but it could be different for you:

  1. all vegetables
  2. grass-fed meat
  3. fish
  4. nothing from a box or a can
  5. berries or quality fruit (keep it to a minimum, like 1 serving per day)
  6. EVOO (very little)
  7. seafood
  8. gluten-free whole grains (yes, you heard me right - they have no impact on my immunity. It used to be buckwheat and brown rice, but now I think white is even better).

I cannot have fermented foods yet, but you might. So try adding some sauerkraut or kimchi, but only 1 or 2 tbs with each meal.

Don't know what else to say. Good luck from your colleague!

Our immune systems have a very poor memory for cold viruses, so you can expect to be susceptible to kid germs pretty much forever.

For a while I was getting colds almost every 2 weeks when I worked with kids, and something that really helped was when I found out that I was hypothyroid and started thyroid replacement therapy.

Also, it is a really bad allergy season, I don't normally get springtime allergies, but I've been just floored by it some days this year. Even my baby is showing signs of spring allergies. Quercetin, if I take 2 capsules a day seems to help keep me ahead of the misery when I remember to take it. You could do a quick test to see if it is allergies by taking Allegra or its generic equivalent for a few days and see if you improve.

If it's allergies, I have no suggestions. If it's viral, yes it could totally be the kids. Make sure you wash your hands regularly, carry some type of hand sanitiser, and do not touch your face. We give ourselves viruses by touching our faces.

I recommend that you try colostrum, it will strengthen your immune system, even if it comes from a cow, it has benefits for humans too. It's also good for stomach problems.
