Help! I have a cold that won't go away

I believe I have a sinus infection. I get these every so often and normally I would just go into the doctors and get an antibiotic and clear it up in a few days or so. Now being Paleo I understand that is discouraged.

The problem is, now it's just lingering. I have yellow mucus when I blow my nose and I can feel slime in the back of my throat. I have a persistent headache and I'm obviously fatigued.

So far I've been drinking homemade bone broth to try and help. I enjoy it while I'm drinking it but it doesn't seem to solve the underlining infection.

Does anyone have any other ideas that could help?

PS: For those of you who wonder, no I do not eat grains or milk. I have yogurt that I make myself from goats milk (i have goats) on occasion, but not frequently.

Thanks for the comment. I'll try distilled water next time and I have some packages that supposedly contain the correct pH balance.

I have been fighting a sinus infection off and on for a month. Honestly, this is the only time I have been this sick since the 80's. i finally went to the doc and got some antibiotics--am feeling better already (it's day 3). There are a lot of people around this area with the same problem this year--dont' know what is causing it, but i was just tired of feeling like crap and being dizzy all the time.

Paleo isn't a religion. If you have a sinus infection, go get antibiotics for heaven's sake. Would you not treat an infected wound because it wasn't paleo??

If it lingers, go to the doctor.

DO you live near any fields of Oilseed Rape? There is a load of it near me (UK) and it is affecting my asthma / throat - and lots of my friends too.

Paul, I recommend using distilled water. I also like to use the squeeze bottle type vs the neti pot. Use warm water and the correct amount of salt/baking soda to get the proper pH so it doesn't sting. The first few times I used a nasal rinse was uncomfortable, but after a week of using it daily it was easier and it really seem to speed up healing of sinus infections.

It could be allergies. I am on twice a day Allegra right now as much as I hate it. I was using a type of prescription nasal spray for awhile until I ran out. I get these "infections" regularly. That's why I thought it was something bacterial.

I have tried that a few months back. It felt a bit like I was drowning. Still if it will help I'll get some filtered water and try again.

Salt? Really. That's the first time I've ever heard that.

4g vitamin C could do the trick if you want to do it fast, otherwise you can try eating high amounts of salt.

You have my sympathy - I've had a sinus infection for almost 3 weeks now. I've been using the xylitol spray and doing saline irrigation. Both help a little but ultimately I know I just have to wait it out. No point in me going to docs - they'll give me antibiotics which will release the pressure but won't clear it.

Thankfully mine is on its way out now and for once, actually seems to be clearing (ah yes, the joys of the yellow mucus!).

So I'm afraid no real advice to give, but a virtual hug and my sympathies!

Neti pot or saline nasal rinse is helpful to some.

Gargling with salt water might help by killing bacteria/viruses in your throat.

I've never used this but I've bought this Xylitol nasal wash for possible future use.

Are you sure it's not allergies? I get nasal symptoms including yellow discharge every spring, depending on where I'm living (currently Arizona), and I found that the nasal rinse helps, but they don't go away until I start taking allergy medicine.

I don't like to take medicine if I don't have to, so I start by taking Zyrtec and Flonase, plus twice daily neti pot, until it starts to become summer, and then try to wean myself off. I'm off Flonase now but still taking Zyrtec for itchy eyes and rinsing with the neti pot.

Yours might not be allergies, but I wouldn't just assume that yellow discharge means you have a sinus infection. Doctors used to say that, but now I've heard from docs that you can't tell if you have an infection just by the color of the discharge. Allergy discharge can be yellow too.

If it is a true sinus infection it wont. And the chances of it spreading are greater if it is and you ignore the fact you need antibiotics.

If it is just your sinuses being stopped up you can use over the counter sinus remedies. I alternate Tylenol and Advil. Both seem to help and alleviate my head pain.

Warm menthol vapors will also help.

If you have sinus problems the best thing you can do is have your doctor prescribe a nasal spray of their choice and use it every day. It will ward off the sinus attacks.

If it's viral, Sambucus (which is an elderberry extract as a cough syrup) does wonders. It's also sold as pills.

If it's bacterial and coconut oil hasn't taken care of it, give oregano oil a try - but be very careful as you don't want to use more than 1-2 drops 2x/day. It's very strong stuff and if you over do it, you can kill the bacteria in your gut and get a nasty Herxheimer reaction. You'd put in 1-2 drops in something else, maybe coffee or tea.

Make sure you take lots of fermented foods afterwards to rebuild gut bacteria. You'd want home made yogurt/kefir, kraut/kambucha/kimchi/pickles, the commercial stuff has some bacteria, but not enough - especially yogurts as they're not fermented for very long.

Be sure to go very low carb as this helps starve out whatever critters are attacking you. Plus things like sugar tend to shut off your immune system for hours on end.

Of course, it could be allergies. If you have a temperature, headache, or other symptoms, and you said you do, it's probably not an allergy - the yellow mucus is a sign of bacteria btw. Try oil pulls with coconut oil, and a drop of oregano oil in addition to consuming coconut oil and a drop of oregano oil in food/drink.

(Oil pull: take a tablespoon of coconut oil, let it melt in your mouth and swish it around for 20 minutes or so and gargle with it, then spit it out.)

I don't know where you live, but here in NE Texas, everyone has been suffering from sinus infections caused by allergies for over 2 months. I myself have been the sickest I have ever been in over 2 decades (I never ever get sick) I have a sinus/ear infection that just won't go away even after 2 rounds of antibiotics (which I hate taking). A friend of ours was actually hospitalized for it after the infection spread through his body. Mine just feels like I am drunk all the time which is very very annoying. I have to take a Zyrtec-D every day just to keep it under control. One of my friends who works at the hospital here says that the allergiests and otolarynologists (sp?) are saying they have never seen so many people with sinus infections ever. Go to the doctor and do what you can before it spreads into your body.

You are actually right. Antibiotics have been discouraged for sinus infections. (They are actually useless for most sinus infections). But I came across something that actually guarantees to help with your sinuses.

Ever heard of 'The Sinus Doctor Sinus Treatment'? A its a sinus remedy that I can testify to be legit. Though it might cost u a bit, $92 is a small price to pay to beat the suffering of sinus infection. (You can read the reviews about it. . . Its legit!)

Find out more on the owner's site.

36 HOURS only and your sinuses will NEVER come back. I hope to here your testimony. (You can share this with anyone else who suffers the same.)

Good luck!

How long have you been paleo? It could be Carb Flu.
