Many electrolytes have a salty taste. Plus salt has a lot of trace minerals in it. Same thing as craving sugar when low energy -- body want cheap bioavailable resources I can use quickly.

sugar cravings are not uncommon when sick. sugar is easy for the body to burn for fuel, and in a depleted state the body like easy. Try eating fruit and lowering protein intake.

It's better to eat less frequently than to nibble and graze. Perhaps after eating a breakfast of fat and protein (I hope it's meat) your body is busy digesting and doesn't want any apples right now.
