I don't like milk, but I eat butter and cheese. I read Robb Wolf's Paleo Solution and he says it's bad for the gut. What do you think? Should I be taking butter and cheese or it will lead to poor health and fat gain over long term?

I don't tolerate milk, cream or yogourt, but i do very well with butter or cheese, so i have them every once in a while and i feel perfectly fine, i've lost 18 lb so far :)

If you don't eat other fermented foods, cheese is a great source of vitamin K2. Butter and ghee have less. The issue with cheese is that its protein is mostly casein, which can cause digestive issues for some people. Since I eat kimchi regularly, I don't eat much cheese, but I don't avoid it. I don't eat butter.

My ancestry lies in northern europe and the caucuses so dairy is a good friend of mine. Dairy is perfectly fine if you're lactose persistent. I think Robb disavows it because its one of foods that would mess up a lot of people who are simply skimming the surface of "paleo" and don't really care for the science behind it.

Some people just don't tolerate dairy, and need to stay away. But you can see if it's OK for you. If you want to hedge your bets, try ghee instead of butter, or cultured butter made from raw cream, and you may find some cheeses are better tolerated than others.

I can't see how butter is bad for the gut. Maybe if you have a fragile gut. And if you have a fragile gut, you can always try fresh goat cheese.
