How To Increase Viral Immunity?

Answered on December 11, 2014

So... somehow, despite not even getting so much as the sniffles in years, I have had a shingles outbreak about 7 months ago and now learning that I have one of the many strains of HPV (not the wart kind.. in case you're wondering). What gives?! I am never sick, don't have allergies, don't have gut problems, monitor and read about my health/food/nutrient intake more than anyone I know and I am somehow overrun with these little silent bastards.

Any tips on how to drive them out? Anyone successfully beaten a virus in the past? Anyone tried super high dose vit c ala Pauling?

Anythingggg? I am desperate here. And of course my doc was super non-chalant about the whole thing. Said shouldn't be too worried.. maybe the virus will be gone by next time we test. Oh, okay.. thanks doc!

I guess that's the rub.. I don't get any "normal," sicknesses like colds. Every grubby child and parent can be sneezing around me and I won't be affected. Who knows. Considering they don't start testing for HPV until you're 30 (and that's just a recent mandate) I have to assume I have had the virus for quite some time. I almost wish I didn't know. Ignorance could be bliss.. right? Thanks!

I take 8000 IUs in the winter and 6000 IUs in the summer. Only one cold virus in 3.5 years.

Yeah, I think we are all guinea pigging ourselves on this IF stuff. :) You might email Paul Jaminet from PHD and ask what he thinks about how your methyl cycle defect might play into fighting off viral stuff. He is pretty responsive, and has pointed me to other resources in the past.

Yes, I've also heard that HPV can "clear up", but I don't know how accurate of a description that is of what happens.

Last serum test put it at 49. I supp about 3-4000 a day. Maybe I'll try a higher dose.. just to see. Although summer is just around the corner, so maybe I won't have to!

Thanks! Yes, I do IF, and have been for 2 + years. Not sure if it helps me much. Sometimes, I think it is doing more harm by putting unnecessary stress on the body. But who knows. Unfortunately I can't supp glutathione or its precursors bc of a methyl cycle (b12 and folate) issue. Glut and its friends waste B12, which is no bueno for me. I will read back through Paul's posts for some insights. I am thinking of doing the vit c. to bowel tolerance experiment. Thanks for your insights.

Oh.. also, I have some methyl cycle issues, b12 and folate deficiency. I have read some pretty compelling stuff on connection between those deficiencies and viral infections, specifically shingles and hpv. Here is one example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22351779

Yah, the shingles is mine to keep, but it is my understanding that HPV is non-permanent. I unfortunately do have the high risk variety so will now have to have my lady parts checked yearly instead of every 3 years as I was doing. Of course, I would like the little jerks to leave me so as not to spread the virus to the S.O. (who doesn't know yet if they are infected). I'll tell you, the prevalence of HPV should make me feel better, but it kinda creeps me out. Thanks for your thoughts!

Nearly everyone has been exposed to a type of herpes (in your case, because of shingles, the chicken pox). Disturbingly (or amusingly) enough, most people pick up herpes from their families - i.e. "Come kiss Grandma!" Many to most people have also been exposed to HPV (nearly all males carrying any of most HPV strains are asymptomatic carriers).

You have to accept one thing: the viruses themselves aren't going anywhere. Some types of herpes for some people never recur, and some types of HPV never present issues or "clear up." However, the virus remains dormant in the body. (So, barring some amazing new, fictional virus-fighting medical technology, the viruses are yours for good.)

If HPV isn't causing issues, then all your need to do (as a female) is get your usual lady-parts checkups, but make sure to check for cervical displasia, since HPV is linked to cervical cancer. You should make sure your OB/GYN knows that you should be checked regularly.

Shingles does have a vaccine, but I don't know how/when it can be given. I'm guessing it can't be administered right after a breakout - but you should consult your doctor, as I know nothing specific about that vaccine. I have older relatives swear they had a breakout after stretching funny or cracking their back. It is commonly believed that the virus "hides" in nerve cells, so this might actually be the case. Also, it explains why stress may trigger outbreaks.

Summary: you have some stuff to watch out for, but it's manageable. Try to remain calm and happy. :-)

Here is a good synopsis of ideas for chronic bacterial infections from Perfect Health Diet, and I would bet that there's plenty of overlap for chronic viral.

http://perfecthealthdiet.com/2010/07/eleven-steps-for-overcoming-alzheimer???s-and-other-chronic-infectious-diseases/

I am sure you already do a lot of these. Some that I have been looking into lately are (1) use of IF to promote autophagy and better immunity, and (2) supplementing glutathione and iodine.

And here's a whole list of posts from them on infectious disease: http://perfecthealthdiet.com/category/disease/infections/

If you haven't read the book, there's a chapter on how we get exposed to various bacteria and viruses throughout life, and how a lot of problems of aging are really the buildup of these chronic, low level illnesses.

How's your Vitamin D status? Sunning/supplementing to a blood level of 60-80 ng/ ml may be useful.
