What can you clean, make healthy or perfume your body with that is paleo?

Since I'm a Caveman, I want to start using things that are naturally found on the planet. I want to smell good, have healthy/teeth skin and clean my body with things like fruits, herbs, natural deposits of minerals, etc. I think it's great ancient people were using things like Natron to clean their bodies with.

I'm looking for the following things I can use in these areas:

  • Shampoo
  • Washing my face
  • Shaving Cream
  • Cologne
  • Washing my body
  • Dental hygiene (toothpaste, mouthwash)

So, what can I use that is natural that can clean my body and/or make it smell good? What would make my skin and teeth clear and healthy?

Note: If you have anything else I forgot in the list or is also useful please feel free to add by edit or by an answer.

Thank you.

Sorry for the daly in answering. You would have to email my sister Terri directly for the answer to this. I know she does send to the US so I would assume that customs wouldn't be a problem if you are ordering smallish quantities. I know that the UK is not as strict with quarantine as Australia is and as it is a processed material,ie no raw animal products, I don't see what issues you would have. Hope this helps. It is a great product.

you do make sense, I wondered about this, but I am still unsure, I felt like I should probably get to a lab and ask for a test to compare raw coconut oil vs. coconut oil that we spit out vs. spit. But since I most probably won't be able to, I thought I'd stick to the information at hand. The only difference I observed in myself, between ingesting the oil-pulled coconut oil, and spitting it out, is that the latter helped me spit phlegm easier(TMI sorry).

For oil pulling - it's a myth that the coconut oil gets filled with "waste", you might as well swallow it. It's healthy calories mixed with tons of digestive enzymes. Nothing unusually bad (i.e. wouldn't be there in normal eating) is in it.

Yes! Like Chris, I use almond oil for shaving. Works great on legs, I don't see why it wouldn't be great on a face.

To make your own scrub you can use the ground beans for filter coffee after making coffee out of them. It's not as strange as it may sound and you wont end up smelling like coffee :)

I would like to apologize in advance for the following eyesore, If you hate reading and just want the summary, just read the bold-ed words. If you want to know the how and the why and all my other bla blas read the whole thing, and if I got something wrong please feel free to point it out!

  • Shampoo : -> Baking Soda (1tbsp/1Cwater), then afterwards rinse your hair with an Apple cider vinegar rinse (1 Tbsp/1C water). Once dry, your hair won't smell like vinegar, but if you want your hair to smell nice, add a few drops of lavender oil, peppermint oil, or some oil that you'd like your hair to smell like. and your hair will end up smelling like that oil.

  • Washing your face: Water and "Dr.bronner's castile soap"(The solid soap) usually works for me.

  • Shaving cream: coconut oil, or almond oil.

  • cologne: My sister used to have these perfumes that she made at her former job at some sort of essential oil store, she used to add some essential oil to a carrier oil (jojoba oil or something), and she smelled great. BUT I still haven't figured it out. [if someone has any idea how to make your own cologne or get a natural amazing cologne please do tell!]

  • Washing my body: I use Dr.bronner's castile soap (solid)(they come in different.."smells") and if I were to use the liquid version, I would just add 2 drops on my lufa then add water to it.

  • Dental hygiene: Toothpaste :Some people buy natural toothpastes, but I personally do not know what the good brands are. Homemade toothpaste: -> coconut oil + baking soda + essential oil(optional). OR baking soda + a little bit of water (until the mix is pasty) + essential oil(optional).

Mouthwash : Oil pulling using coconut oil: swish 1/2 -1 Tbsp coconut oil in your mouth for 10-15 mins (you can go up to 20 minutes if you like a challenge) then SPIT it out.then wash your mouth thoroughly with water because the coconut oil becomes filled with waste and bacteria from the mouth, so you shouldn't swallow that, and you should wash your mouth well afterwords.

    • Deodorant: Sadly I'm still using the chemical bombs. I don't know about the homemade versions. For ones you can buy; I hear that Crystal deodorant sticks are good, but if you tend to get stinky after some activities then maybe try primal life organics'deodorant they say that their deodorant is tested on crossfitters.

Shaving with oils - in the shower - gets a really great closeness and leaves skin very moisturized.

My daughter has very curly hair, i do use leave in conditioner to avoid the fuzz ball effect but when washing her hair i thoroughly rinse with the shower head, spray on some white vinegar, work it through her hair & thoroughly rinse again . I then dry it & comb through some almond oil. Her hair always comes out beautiful.

I also use white vinegar & water for an anti bacterial spray for everything!

I would be interested in other answers too, nice post!

I hope no one minds a shameless plug for my sister's handmade soaps and creams however others mention brand names so I hope it is alright (My apologies if not). They are truly paleo friendly as they are made with organic coconut oil and grass fed tallow (beef fat from the body cavity which is even more saturated then the external fat) from small hobby farms in south east Queensland, Australia. I've been using her soap for years and never even have to use a moisturiser after washing (I use it on my face too and I know others who use it for washing their hair or getting stains out of clothes). Have a look at her website:[1]: http://www.tallowskincare.com.au

I use:

  • Shaving cream: Herban Cowboy organic aloe based. Smells amazing.
  • Cologne: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab oils. I have ten or so that I rotate.
  • Ayurvedic coconut oil based soap (the green one? Made in India, but all three of my health food stores carry it at 99 cents a bar),
  • Jason's shampoo/conditioner (SLS free),
  • Nature's Gate deodorants (usually Summer Spice - aluminum free, witch-hazel based),
  • Himalaya Neem and Pomegranate toothpaste (fluoride free, I LOVE the way this makes my teeth feel), and
  • Kiss My Face lotion, when need be.

I get a lot of compliments on my hair/skin/eyes, but I think diet has had more impact on that than anything. My skin does get a little drier if I reduce the amount of good fats I'm eating.

I tried the whole shaving with coconut oil thing, but I couldn't contain the mess.

I love to moisturize with coconut oil. It smells really good. I also make a scrub out of it by melting it and mixing with sugar until it's the intended consistency and then I use it right in the shower. A tip if you're going to do that though, be sure to put it in a container you can get your hand into. The first time I made it I put it in a ball jar, so I could only use the first little bit before I had to get a spoon...kind of annoying.
