Pretty confused about my G.I

Hello folks :)

So after having chronic constipation, with a wide range of symptoms,( I won't list them all) but they go along the lines of trouble concentrating, occasional headaches, bloating..etc. I finally got to see the G.I specialist, I got an x-ray done and he said I have severe constipation after . " We don't see this too often with people your age" , he said. I'm 16 and i've had constipation issues when I was young, but this isn't some kind of life long struggle. now, especially after paleo, things have spiraled down.

I also had to take a blood test for celiac and a few other things like iron deficiency ( results not back yet.)

I did a colon cleanse, similar to what u'd take before a colonoscopy, and now im taking a osmotic laxative and will follow that up with a gentle fibre supplement if things get too watery.

I just went to the bathroom and my stool was quite off-smelling and I saw undigested fat. It wasn't so much on the solid side, but i assume its just the osmotic laxative doing its job. What the hell is going on?

Is the laxative just causing this?

Was I somehow dependent on grains on my old diet and now that i'm not on it anymore i'm seeing the " damage " done by the S.A.D?

I should also note, while transitioning to paleo I became underweight and lost my period because I used to eat " high satisfaction foods", and when I changed over to paleo ( and not knowing how to cook much), things tasted rather bland and i lost my appetite, not that I had a big one in the first place.

Someone suggested I just go back to how I was before, minus the junk food and sugar, but i'm not sure I want to take that advice..or should I?

If there is any other information or advice you have for me it would be much appreciated!

Thanks guys :)

That's a very good point! Yep I have researched FODMAPs, the G.I specialist was impressed. I don't eat any high fodmap foods now, and while I was all clogged up It relieved some of the symptoms a bit. I still go by this. I do eat brown ( sometimes white ) rice/rice crackers and potateos and this has improved my mood. A relative is comming over today so we are buying wholegrain bread for her. Whole grain bread was a big part of my past diet, and my mum needs someone else to finish the loaf ( shes paleo) should I experiment?

Have you researched FODMAPs? Maybe your normal diet - FODMAPs.

I see :/. I'm kinda at wits end right now, every day I seem to be battling with conflicting information. Thank-you for your responses. Do you think I should go back to my previous diet minus the junk food/sugar ( basically reintroducing grains) even though i'm back at a healthy weight? and from this see how I feel?

The G.I specialist recommended everything i'm taking. I know all the dangers of laxatives and I would not take them, but i'm following her orders. I'm not underweight anymore, i'm at a healthy weight and my period has returned, i've been like this for a while. I suggested to my G.I specialist that there could be an issue with my gut flora but she didn't agree with this. I'm fully aware of calories and make sure I eat enough.

Is the laxative just causing this?

Um, yeah. Laxatives and cleanses strip out your gut mucosa, rendering it vulnerable to infection and not very good at doing its job of absorbing nutrients. You need to stop doing these things or you'll never get your GI tract running normally because your gut bacteria, which produce the poo that prevents you from being constipated, are being tortured. Don't worry, when I was 15 I had old lady constipation. And now I don't. It's all about your gut integrity and laxatives and cleanses are an assault on that.

Did constipation start after you went paleo?

I should also note, while transitioning to paleo I became underweight and lost my period because I used to eat " high satisfaction foods", and when I changed over to paleo ( and not knowing how to cook much), things tasted rather bland and i lost my appetite, not that I had a big one in the first place.

Amenorrhea + constipation + laxative use seem kind of scary to me. If getting back to a normal weight requires you to ditch paleo, you need to do that for your health.

Someone suggested I just go back to how I was before, minus the junk food and sugar, but i'm not sure I want to take that advice..or should I?

YES. You should take that advice. Then SLOWLY eliminate potentially problematic foods, but make sure to replace them with something with calories and nutrients. I often see people try paleo by just subtracting "unpaleo" foods from their diet, like just ordering burgers without buns. Not surprisingly, they become hungry and irritable. You need calories, particularly if you are 16 and your body is still developing.
