Is becoming completely constipated normal?

I'm about ten days into eating Paleo and I have severe constipation. I've tried adding Kimchi and am eating lots of fiberous food. Am I the only one? Is this normal?

Phew! I've only heard of black stools in relation to bleeding. I'm so happy for you, and that you are in good health.

Hey, Happy Now. It wasn't internal bleeding. I got it checked, and it was just a lot of old waste that was stuck to my anal cavity. Gross, I know. My mother had the same reaction. My doc is really happy for me now that I have my gut and bowels under control. He doesn't like paleo, but he's seen a live example of success, so he just told me to stick with it. Thanks for the concern. :D

At any point did you consult with a doctor? You are aware that you had internal bleeding right? That isn't something to take lightly. Even though you are doing better now, you should still be screened for ulcers, colitis, and colon cancer.

WARNING: SOME TMI

I've had constipation for four days. After that, I felt like my intestines and stomach were going to drop down. My stools were black. Absolutely black.

I defecated two days later, and still back.

Now I'm into two months, and I have normal stools. The first three weeks were filled with stomach cramping, constipation, and black stools. But then again, I ate REALLY unhealthily before, so it's understandable.

KEEP ON! Don't give up! You are making the right choice!

Soaking your legs in a bath of epsom salt is a good, non-digestive way to gain magnesium and throw some metabolic switches that may help you go. I've had this problem and found this a good alternative when the idea of adding to the pile in my belly is not appealing.

Common when people first switch, but no, not normal in the healthy sense normal.

Too much fiber (especially non-soluble fiber) can be just as bad as not enough.

Trouble shooting ideas:

  • More fat, less protein
  • Magnesium
  • Prebiotic fiber from root vegetables
  • Try drinking some water with a 1/2 tsp. unrefined salt
  • Enema
  • Call doctor if those don't work, you could have a blockage

If you have been going gangbusters on lean meat (more than 25%-30% of calories) which many people do at first, that could be your problem right there.

If you are doing primal and eating a ton of cheese that can do it too.
