Are sunflower seeds paleo?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I started to eat raw sunflower seeds for a few days (about a handful a day) and I started to feel off... just irritable, tired, and slightly sickly. I took them out for a week and I felt fine. I grabbed a handful last night and I woke up this morning again irritable, tired, and slightly sickly.

Are sunflower seeds paleo? I am almost certain there is a correlation with eating them and how I feel...

Ah - sorry - Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids. Superior, longer chain types found in animal fats. Nuts and seeds tend to be high - macadamia very much the exception, and walnuts offer a good n3:n6 ratio, BUT are nevertheless very high in PUFA overall.

Sound advice. What exactly if PUFA though? I keep hearing about it but can never find a definition.

Maybe not... I might be overreacting. I'll eliminate and then add one seed back at a time to see what works and what isn't.

Macadamias, sesame seeds and almonds don't have that affect on me though. Do you need to avoid the entire group just because one seed type was offensive?

almonds are my trigger food...I've ate 1.5lbs in one day before. I haven't bought them in 4 months.

Nut butters in general don't last long, so I just keep them out of the house as much possible!

haha I had that problem with almond butter. I froze it into bars and then I couldn't stop eating them! Funny though I think almond butter messed with me as well. I guess I'm really not a nuts person... maybe the phytic acid like Dan said causes me issues.

Trigger, as in once I start I can't stop eating them. So it's best for me to avoid which is the reason if there is a jar of sun butter in the house, it goes fast!

Paleo. However, it may be something that you don't tolerate well. I avoid them because they are a trigger food for me. If there is a jar of sunflower seed butter in the house, it won't survive the day!

Nope - since when did "Grok" have access to kilos of raw (uncultivated, to boot!) sunflower seeds? You are suffering from PUFA "toxicity", plain and simple.

Anyway - even though we are hacking paleo here, sunflower seeds - ALL seeds, and MOST nuts should be consumed in moderation, and only occasionally. That's based on the PUFA loading that's going to hit you (aside from excess n6). Leave seeds for the birds, and eat macadamia or walnuts in moderation. All other nuts (eg almonds) sparingly. If you crave fats - get them from animals.

Fits to the paleo meme in any case...

Well, seeds are generally considered something to enjoy in moderation on a pale diet but you know what isn't paleo? Eating something that makes you feel sick and bad. Listen to your body to optimize your diet. No two people are the same.

Whoa!!! This same exact thing happened to me last night too! Woke up this morning not in a good mood, feeling the effects of what I ate last night, which included raw sunflower seeds. Though to be fair, My meal last night was at midnight and a bit too large, so that plays some part in it, but I've done that before and it wasn't this bad.

I've learned my lesson too (to stay away from them). I'm starting to realize that I should get more and more of my protein from animal sources, not nuts and seeds.

Sunflower seeds also seem to be high in phytic acid (raw ones anyway). Try having roasted ones and see if that makes a difference. The roasting takes a lot of the phytate out.

Well yeah...but eat only a few once in a while. Sunflower seeds have a crapload of Omega 6 fatty acids. I'm not a big fan of seeds. I prefer dark nuts like walnuts and brazil nuts better.

Sunflower seeds are very high in phytic acid. For me the eat at my teeth and don't digest well. They may work very well for some other people.
