How to get back on track while still on vacation

I've been successfully paleo for about 3 months now and I am On vacation right now. I did really well the first week at my Mother's house but she's a whole foodie so it wasn't a stretch. I came to another relatives house and like clockwork, it started with me allowing myself some cafo/additive laden lunch meat to a milk shake while out with everyone and then tonight I got in to the breaded fried crap at the restaurant my relatives ordered even though I only ordered raw oysters for myself. Then a cookie when we got home. If I were "normal" I'd say "big deal" I'm on vacation but I can already feel the bad binge/craving cycle that I had on SAD creeping up. It took me Months of weaning to get myself off all this crap before. Obviously in a week when I'm home I'll no longer be surrounded by it but have any of you with really bad carb/ sugar addictions had any luck getting back on track in my situation. I feel kind of out of control. Would a day of fasting help? Or just forcing myself on a vlc day of nothing but meat and fat? I know I sound disordered but I'm only like this when I'm allowing wheat. It makes me all frantic and binge-y.

I do not let one bad choice roll into other bad choices and "the day is ruined" so I might as well or "the weekend is ruined" or I'll start back on Monday.

That's exactly what I was talking about avoiding Cass. The fasting isn't ever to undo one bad choice or a particular type of choice. For me, it's after the holidays or a long weekend or something like that. Otherwise, I do well, to plan my non-Paleo eating and then organize the rest of my day of eating to offset that and be really good Paleo eating. So, I may have a milkshake with the family, but everything else that day is good. If I eat something unplanned and feel like it's a bad choice, I forgive myself, move on and make the very next thing I put in my mouth something healthy.

I have been making poor food choices (dessert/pastries) and would binge on them and attempt to fast the next day to RESET, however, i feel deprived and am worried that I am now falling into the pattern of allowing myself to binge on sugar/sweets and attempt to undo it by fasting the next day, but it doesn't work this way, because i'm eating sweets more and more frequently? do you have any recommendations to come out of this cycle?

My pescatarian sister has to do gluten free or it makes her binge/crave more of the same, so you are not alone!

I'm going to try this and then go carb-less the rest of the day. Thanks.

Completely cut out the carbs, they can be like a drug to some people. Carbs beget carbs, and so on, and so on, and so on, so give it up cold turkey, and don't wait until your vacation is over.

Buy a can of full fat coconut milk and drink it first thing in the morning. You'll be too full the rest of the day to think about carbs.

I do find that after some particularly bad food choices that a day of fasting can help reset my mind pretty well. The thing is, that being and eating disordered person, I have to be careful that it doesn't become a binge/restrict cycle. I am RESETTING, not PUNISHING myself for the bad food choices. It's a mental distinction, but a very, very important one for me. It works better than VLC for me.

I find traveling difficult. After years of eating this way, I no longer have trouble saying no. What I do find difficult is finding enough to eat. It really brings home how wheat heavy, sugar heavy, and polyunsaturated fat heavy typical fare is these days. When you are in a restaurant with your relatives or close friends, they will try to lead you astray. Just say to yourself that you are eating for health and vigor, and politely ignore their suggestions and entreaties. Try to order enough to eat, say a steak and a couple vegetable sides with some extra butter. I love raw oysters too, but its not enough to eat. An easily transportable snack while traveling is unsweetened coconut chips from tropical traditions. http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/organic_dried_coconut.htm Full of healthy fat, they will fill you up when you come up short calorie wise.

I'd avoid all wheat and sugar. That makes me binge, but potatoes or white rice with butter doesn't have that effect on me, they satiate me. It's a tricky line because if this involves old compulsions, you don't want to stress yourself out too much. I notice that when I go VLC I get wired and more anxious than usual. And when I'm on vacation I tend to eat more out of boredom, nothing better to do. Are you feeling pressured to eat what others are eating? Like would they be offended if you explain that you can't eat most of the foods they eat?

It all depends on what's available but if I were stuck in the middle of nowhere, I'd rely on heavy cream, coconut milk, butter, unprocessed meats, eggs, and leafy greens. If I want a 'comfort food' I'd have mashed sweet potatoes or white rice or dark chocolate. Stock up on these foods or whatever is closest to your paleo diet, and then when you go out to eat, just get a salad with coffee and cream. If you can cut out all gluten and sugar you should still feel alright. And don't be so hard on yourself!

I went on a cruise about 7 weeks ago, and I ate sooooo much crap food over the course of 7 days. When I got back, I didn't touch any carbs outside my veggies for a few days, and I recovered pretty quickly. I binged on meat, meat, and more meat. Eggs, too.
