I'm a college student, embarking on my senior thesis. I'm wondering if any of you have any recommendations about possible topics to pursue in agricultural economics, perhaps with a focus on sustainability or organic farming. Who knows--I might just come out with a research paper based on your idea :)

I'm a doctorate student in Agricultural and Applied Economics with an emphasis in environmental economics and sustainable agriculture. Start reading the scientific journals that specifically target your interests in sustainable agriculture like Ecological Economics and Agriculture and Human Values. You'll see that the possibilities are endless. You might also look at the Journal of Rural Sociology, which often has an agricultural slant such as Food Security or Local Food Systems. When you find an article that interests you, look at the keywords and the list of citations for other possible articles to read or "google scholar searches to perform." Have fun! I doubt you'll have trouble finding a topic this way.

I am interested in the move to local food sourcing and encouraging young people to become producers. We're doing this in Saskatchewan, at the beginning stages, working with Heifer International. I'd suggest connecting with HI to see if it has research needs.

Water use in meat production. I did mine in regulatory obstacles to local food production, which is a cool topic too.

The big issue with farming as I see it is the inability for folks to make a living doing it, or a comfortable living doing it. Monetary output per acre under various models would be an interesting topic to explore. Rotational grazing, polyculture, etc.... all interesting.
