How do you geek out?

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created April 24, 2012 at 6:19 AM

It is obvious by the fact that we are all on such a forum that people here like to get their geek on and thoroughly research things that interest them in the realm of health/nutrition/fitness. But what is your favourite topic to scour the internet for?

Personally, I love to read about nutrition and stumble upon blogs/articles/journals/books/magazines that highlight all the different ways you can heal yourself and change your body composition simply by what you consume.

But what intrigues you? What do you think about day in and day out, and have probably researched so much you deserve a doctorate in the field? Or, what do you wish had more resources that you could find out more about?

Thank you for the introduction to memrise. I'm brushing up on Spanish. I spend too much time on PH, but so glad to have found your response. Looked into Khanacademy as well. Must find more things to challenge my brain now that it is clearer from better eating.

Cakeand Cookies- Well similarly maybe I should be offended, but I´m not. I suspect that this behavior is a flight-mechanism when I am stressed. Like right now I am supposed to be figuring out SAS to be able to calculate the statistics for my research paper. In the last two days I have purchased an antique cast iron skillet, extensively researched how to restore it on youtube, smoked out my house while seasoning it in the oven, and scared the crap out of my self by watching a but load of videos about SHTF and bug out bags and survival strategies in case of societal collapse.

I know what you mean, but at the same time science is forever changing and nothing is certain. Who knows...in 5 years from now we could find out the whole Paleo community die of heart-attacks or some disease related to high-fat and high-protein consumption...My mum always tells me that there was time chicken and eggs were deemed devil foods...it's hard to know who actually has it right... I do know though that I feel better on Paleo :)

I go the extra step I have my browser set to auto save all my tabs so next time i open it all my tabs come back and i finish reading where i left off. So its a constant battle to keep myself within tab limits which is the number of tabs before you get the arrow to move right. Somedays I reduce em to just a couple but its a habit i cant seem to break.

When I'm bored: StumbleUpon, searching "nutrition" or "health." Lectures on YouTube.

When I'm curious: Paleo/health blogs (Mark's Daily Apple, The Daily Lipid, Perfect Health Diet, etc.). Then checking to see what other Paleo/health blogs have written about that same topic.

When I'm super geeking out and feel like I'm on the verge of a scientific breakthrough: reading research articles (usually about saturated fat or cholesterol or hormones), check the references, read those articles, check more references, occasionally Google something, repeat. All this culminates in having a dozen or more tabs open, a loud groan of frustration, and walking away angrily from my laptop because I've realized everything is a contradiction and there's too many factors involved in--well, everything.

Geeking out for me usually means learning about very random things from watching videos on youtube. These things include but are not limited to: cheese making, sausage making, teepee building, Inuit hunting traditions, caribou, hunting in general, bush craft, tanning leather, earthship buildings, graphic surgeries ... and the list goes on and on. These are usually things that NO ONE that I know of is interested in or wants to discuss.

Once I learned how to train cats to poo in toilets.

I have never owned a cat.

Got really into food science, started a food science/review/blog.

Being a biochemist, it's kinda cool seeing everything come together. Nutrition, biochemistry, and the process of food preparation.

I also enjoy reading about how properly fueled Paleos completely destroy in athletic events.

I usually surf freely reading a oddball collection of articles mostly about being human, nutrition, exercise, mental awareness, consciousness and so on. one of my favorite website is http://psychedelicadventure.blogspot.com/ it has a quirky collection of articles some with factual evidence others being airy fairy monbo jumbo half the fun is figuring out which is which.

Memoy improvement websites and stress reduction... Right now I'm obsessed with khanacademy and memrise. I read a lot of paleo websites even though I'm not a big meat eater. I like the more science based approach.

Wow, my searches evolve weekly! Right now I'm big on researching fermented foods and the best/most cost effectie way to incorporate them into my diet.

My past searches have included: - Why we should limit dairy - The different components of sugar and how they are broken down in the body - The evolution of the standard american diet - Government (and lobbyist) involvement in SAD - Generally ANYTHING to make the most of my paleo journey!

Also, I usually share my research with my (always-skeptical) husband. So i'm always trying to find "scientific proof" to back up my findings :)

It's funny because I never had an interest in nutrition research until I started paleo. There's so much knowledge out there to be had and I am absolutly enjoying soaking it all in.

I like researching fad diets and making myself cross with their bad science...

I'm currently reading the study that the (low-fat, healthy whole grain) DASH diet was based on and feeling quite amazed that a diet was allowed to emerge from such a flawed study! And annoyed that it's being promoted to the unwell...

I'm a relationship geek. Before I inherited my mom's books, 90% of my library was self help/psych. I've been hanging out in success forums on the internet, but I've found a relationship forum that really captivates me. I minor in job-hunting. :D

My paleo interest comes from having a stupid genetic condition that is annoyingly limiting. Good food helps it not be worse than it is. So maybe a second minor in medicine.
