Hack Cold Sores

Answered on August 19, 2014

I get a cold sore about once a year and I always try many holistic remedies to heal them and I'm usually pretty successful.

I use apple cider vinegar, alcohol, manuka honey, black tea bag "compress" coconut oil, and an over the counter lysine-infused lip balm. I'm not sure what works best since I always just go all out with the above.

They say prevention is the best cure, so what do people eat and avoid to absolutely prevent cold sores?

Also what remedies work best for you once you have an outbreak?

SPF=sun protection factor. It's the number on the sunscreen bottle or lip balm label

Interesting. I recently started taking a ZMA supplement, I wonder if that would help...

There are several factors that can trigger cold sores:

  1. Arginine (an amino acid) can activate HSV quite commonly. Found in great quantity in peanuts, chocolate, almonds and chicken. That said, Arginine is usually only a problem if there is not enough lysine (another amino acid) in the body. Most meats have a good ratio between Arginine and Lysine. Chicken as mentioned above is 0.8, while peanuts are 3.0 (much heavier on Arginine).
  2. Lysine lip balms can be helpful in reducing cold sores.
  3. Zinc can also be helpful with cold sores. Zinc deficiency is not uncommon. Always take Zinc with a small amount of copper to keep a balance.

Sunscreen lip balm apply, rinse, repeat. HSV recrudescence is often triggered by UV, so SPF is your friend. Abreva is helpful for some, and acyclovir at the first tingle shortens the duration by a day or two.

I don't have any paleo natural suggestions to share. Of course, I also need to say that this should not be construed as medical advice, see your doctor, etc.

I recently read that the body can use lauric acid (medium chain triglycerides either from MCT oil form or from coconuts) to destroy lipid coated viruses such as herpes. I'm not a doctor or chemist but read this for more info. Maybe some daily coconut oil in your paleo diet will help? http://www.alphahealth.ca/MCT-Oil.html

A Green (any variety) tea bag (Used).. And put it between your teeth and your sore, I am not sure why this works but my great grand mother told me this and mine come and go with in 1-2days of feeling the pain or irritation... They say (Scientists) that toothpaste can help but I feel if they agitate mine when I get them.. A antiseptic mouthwash seems to help mine as it is a bacterial infection, helps with the pain and also kicks the pants off the growth and aids with healing.

Quit peanuts, at least, and all nuts at best, for one year. Go ahead and quit seeds, except flax. Quit caffeine in all forms. Makes the herpes virus go dormant. Been working for me for 6 years, so far. (Knock, knock)

Prevention everyone knows about, foods high in lysine, some antiviral foods like coconut oil may help, some vinegar...

I find I get one a year whatever I do and to get rid of them as fast as possible i don't do anything, I rest, sleep, fast (don't eat anything), don't put anything on it, especially water.

I find this way they last a few days maximum rather than 2 weeks of nasty blistering that grows. I find if i'm using iodine, ACV, coconut oil etc.. it just makes it worse.

@terra

When it comes to foods and cold sores, you want to eat everything high in Lysine and reduce the amount of foods high in Arginine.

High in Lysine: - Milk - White meats - Fish - Cream/ - Cheeses

High in Arginine: - Chocolate (NOOO!) - Nuts - Seeds

If consuming these foods in large quantities is difficult for you (it is for me) then I highly suggest you look at some Lysine based supplements.

This is not a home remedy but it is natural and stops the eruption before it starts, Cold Sores Begone. I've been using it for years, its a topical remedy that you apply when you feel the tingle. I only have to apply it the one time, and the tingle seems to stop immediately. I buy it online because shipping is free (I'm all about convenience). www.coldsoresbegone.com Good luck.

An old thread on Seth Robert's forum. Seems a bit of vinegar a day can keep the virus from manifesting.

I paint mine with Lugol's iodine spread on with a Q tip. It stings a little, but clears it up very quickly. Downside is having a bright orange patch on the lip - fine if I am not going out, but otherwise I do the painting at night. (It fades away over the course of a few hours...)

The things I avoid to prevent cold sores are: coffee, vinegar, nuts, chocolate, lack of sleep and STRESS!! The idea is to stay alkaline overall. The cure I found most helpful is to take RHus Tox homeopathic remedy as soon as one feels the creepy crawlies on the lip which means you will have an out break. If a sore does erupt, keep taking the Rhus Tox which is poison ivy will reduce the burning sensation and shorten the duration. The reason it works is based on "like treats like"; you can take Rhus Tox for anything with a blistery quality like chicken pox. I used it for my son's chicken pox and he never scratched or felt itchy.YOu have to take it every 2 or 3 hours. No water or food 10 minutes before or after the remedy. Avoid things with strong odors like peppermint or menthol products and also coffee which one would avoid anyway.

My girlfriend applies an ice cube to the cold sore as soon as she feels the tingling start, she ices it for approx 30 minutes a few times for the first day, and it rarely becomes a full blown cold sore. After icing she applys her own ear wax using a q-tip - I guess it keeps it from cracking and has some natural healing properties from what she has read.

I haven't had one in over 10 years.

there are three main triggers 1. sugar 2. stress 3. sun.

The key to prevention - the minute you feel one coming on - put an ice cube on it for a long time. this has stopped outbreaks for my mom who gets them often.

The last time I had one I took 4 kyolic (garlic) three times a day and 3 lysine capsules three times a day for about a week.
