Why is everybody so obsessed with bashing red meat?

I live in LA where there are lots of hippies and health conscious people. I've lost count of the number of people who've tried to lecture me on how my steak has saturated fat and is going to kill me.

And then they smugly go back to eating their fat free yogurt thinking they are "healthy" because they don't eat red meat.

Heck, even people I know who eat red meat actually believe that it's bad for them. It's like the media has totally brainwashed everybody into thinking red meat is the devil.

There is no answer to the OPs question because the premise is not true and the topic itself is not at consensus, there is so answer to give, sorry.

And no TheGastronomer, try reading it again. The people who are stupid and crazy are the ones who believe in wild conspiracy theories or other overly reductionists views, the world is complex and you can't reduce everything to god, nature, or other omnipotent powers. ( Some peoples perception of companies? ) And yes I was making funnies with the hipster comment. Not sure if you actually didn't understand that or you were just misquoting me for lulz

You somehow managed to respond to everything and nothing at once. Impressive in a way.

Paleos like kale too but I'd rather eat something else. Try eating a glatt kosher steak at Talia's in the upper west side. You'll find the change refreshing. Lots of salt. Bring earplugs.

A lot of bad answers here...

If you haven't noticed there is plenty money to be made from saturated fat, beef by itself is a pretty significant business. How on earth would grain producers completely bias everyone's opinions through propaganda with such strong opposing interests?

Vegans being narcissists who only care about looks...Hmm, okay? Not even relevant and certainly not true.

Third post is again completely false, obviously, unless you think the beginning of time was when god made earth 3000 years ago...do religious people even believe this anymore??

Okay, so? Real reason is not that there is some conspiracy or that only Rob Wolf knows the secret to life. It's that there are studies done showing strong correlations between red meat and bad things. Assuming we have nothing else to go off of this is very good reason to think that red meat is bad. But of course, correlation is not causation, more and more contradictory studies are coming out questioning the link between saturated fats and poor outcomes and even red meat and poor outcomes, although the later is still quite controversial...possibly for good reason.

The better question is, how did red meat become correlated with poor health outcomes? I imagine each one of you could come up with a variety of answers, everything from food processing. ( Bacon, ham ) To things like Antibiotics and cornfed beef to lifestyle habits potentially caused by some original poorly designed/misunderstood studies.

But in short...stop being crazy and stupid. Science always progresses and self-corrects, this just does not happen quickly because people and society generally oppose change as people prefer what's comfortable, possibly for good reasons. Be happy you are slightly ahead of the curve, if this happens to be correct you will all be red meat hipsters.

“A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.” Max Planck

Well, unfortunately the prevailing idea in society is that saturated fats are the worst type of fats. I thought the same thing until I did my own research. Don't feel bad for them, just tell them that saturated fats have never been implicated to increased risk for heart disease, and infact improve blood lipid profile by increasing HDL cholesterol and lowering tryglicerides. I strongly recommend the book "Perfect Health Diet" if you're interested in learning more about nutrition.

I know that feel, but no need to worry, you should rejoice! Lower beef demand drives down prices, allowing you to eat more beef for less! Demand and supply my friend.

Just think, if all those dirty hippies would have become proper men and women who eat beef, your steak would cost more!

It's super annoying. I used to work in a swanky restaurant in NYC and all these model types/yoga people/gay men were always going on about doing juice fast and colonics and how going vegan is supposed to make you skinny and have glowy skin. They didn't seem to really give a crap about the environment or long-term health, it was all just about beauty. They always ordered raw kale salads (with no oil), egg-white omelettes and diet cokes, I felt bad for them!

Industrial agra and pharma make more profits that way. If people eat full fat dairy, they won't eat as many grains, and if they eat lots of grains pharmaceuticals and sick care profit.
