Best Trail Mix Ingredients

What are some of your favourite recipes and/or ingredients for a trail mix?

I realize this question was posed years ago (here). But I would like to start it again just to get fresh ideas.

Nom Nom Paleo has a great recipe that I have been using. Where I live, it's difficult to find ingredients, so I order them online. I currently like using:

  • Slivered Almonds
  • Coconut Flakes
  • Raw Pumpkin Seeds
  • Unsalted Sunflower Seeds
  • Raisins
  • Dark Chocolate Covered Anything
  • Dried Mangoes and Pineapples

Recently introduced to Nuts.com and now I'm like Grok in an all-you-can-eat meat buffet. I'm looking for your suggestions before I drop $$$ on 100lbs of ingredients!

www.nuts.com has a good selection of reasonably priced nuts. Salted and unsalted. Raw and roasted. You may be able to find something in your price range.

I'd love to try the seaweed. I should be able to find some good seaweeds here locally (I'm in Tokyo).

its not trail mix, but i take a half jar of coconut oil or butter and stuff it with dulse and then let it get all melty in my backpack...best.trailfood.ever. its so nutrient dense it makes me think if i got lost for a few days id probably be alright with my greasy seaweed.

I'd add Cacao nibs, Macadamia nuts, Chopped dates, Freeze dried fruits, Dulse (a dried seaweed, has an awesome chewy and salty flavor) and Crumbled Nori (Seaweed sheets).

Love Bob's Red Mill coconut flakes, they make a super large flake kind that's great for snacking. Pumpkin and Sunflower seeds are great too. If you're limiting sugar, watch out for dried fruit, it's usually got some added. To avoid the extra sugar, I like freeze dried fruits.

I highly suggest adding some seaweed, it adds a nice contrast! But maybe I just have weird tastes!

I wish I could eat a lot more nuts. Its so hard to buy them on a budget, and almost all are cooked in 'cottonseed oil', whatever that is. But if I made trail mix I would put a mix of salted nuts, pieces of enjoy life chocolate, raisins, and organic coconut flakes =) yummy. now im hungry haha
