Eating RAW FROZEN GROUND BEEF once defrosted?

So I want to get into eating raw meats, but the only grass fed meat available to me (that I can afford) is grass fed ground beef. Trader Joe's has it frozen and fresh so I have options ha.

I know ground beef is said not to be eaten raw...but is it safe to buy the frozen kind and eat it raw once thawed? I've heard freezing kills the harmful bacteria (I've also heard it kills the good enzymes but better than getting Ecoli).

Thanks!

Freezing does not kill bacteria. It is somewhat protective against parasites, which is why it is suggested that one freeze liver if one wants to eat it raw.

I am not squeamish about eating raw meat, but I don't think that store bought ground meat is the best way to go about it.

Likely the stuff that is frozen in the store has more then one cow, and is made in large batches. And the stuff that the store grinds for you is ground on equipment that is used for lots of cuts. If you want to eat raw, ground meat, the safest way might be to sterilize your grinder and grind it yourself. Steak Tartare is made by chopping high quality meat, not using pre-ground.

Does Freezing Destroy Bacteria & Parasites? Freezing to 0 °F inactivates any microbes — bacteria, yeasts and molds — present in food. Once thawed, however, these microbes can again become active, multiplying under the right conditions to levels that can lead to foodborne illness. Since they will then grow at about the same rate as microorganisms on fresh food, you must handle thawed items as you would any perishable food. Trichina and other parasites can be destroyed by sub-zero freezing temperatures. However, very strict government-supervised conditions must be met. Home freezing cannot be relied upon to destroy trichina. Thorough cooking, however, will destroy all parasites.

Hey bro, I don't think you should eat ground beef raw. Other cuts of beef are probably safer, but ground beef is generally safer if eaten well cooked.

If I were choosing to eat raw meat, I would find a local farmer's market source. If you read Trader Joe's Organic Hamburger label, the meats come from four different countries and are ground together. I personally believe this can lead to bacterial problems. I would not make the choice to eat their ground beef. Farmer's markets are the least expensive options for good grass fed or organic meats. Whole Foods does grind their own organic and grass fed beef so that would be safer than Trader Joe's. There are specialty butchers in most cities, too.
