Have any of you ever tried earthworms? Are the ones you find in your garden safe? I heard that it's best to have them living in applesauce (organic, no sugar added applesauce I presume would be best) for 24 hours before you eat them so they clear the toxins out of their systems...Are they better raw live or is there some way to cook them? It would be very Grok-like to gather your own earthworms, or am I just nuttier than raw vegan paleo cheesecake for even thinking about it?

I have a worm compost, and I think they are pretty clean, but strangely enough I have felt little desire to make a meal of the little guys.

If I did, I would heat up some coconut oil or duck fat and crisp them up fast, then serve them with a grating of nice parmesan. And a side of steak. Steak et Ver de Terre (rather than pomme de terre)....

But then, who would eat my veggie scraps and egg shells??

I haven't. And I wouldn't, but if I did, I would get one of those worm compost boxes and raise my own. That way, I could feed them what I want, and they's be "clean".

I can attest to the fact that wild earthworms are filled with dirt...

Can't say I have a desire to eat or even try to eat earthworms. That is past my comfort zone.

Perhaps this is a cookbook? http://www.amazon.com/How-Fried-Worms-Thomas-Rockwell/dp/0440445450 (One of my all time favorite books as a kid.)

Toss them in a nice garlic sauce? I'm all about texture and don't think I could choke them down, but Godspeed, buddy!
