30g protein within 30 minutes of waking. Why?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I was listening to a Robb Wolf podcast with Tim Ferriss and I believe he suggested consuming 30g protein within 30 minutes of waking.

What's the theory of doing that?

Must it be pure protein or protein and fat ok?

What if it's 30g protein, carbs & fat all at the same time?

Any clarifications would be very much appreciated,

Thanks, Mike

Well, I did 3 months on the SCD, so you can bet I wasn't always on time. I'd say try as close as you can to get the optimal effect. According to Ferriss it's an easily correctable 'error' that can greatly affect results. But he's probably basing this on folks who neglected the idea altogether.

I think eating a 32g protein bar is reversing priorities. MOST IMPORTANTLY eat real paleo foods. Secondarily mess around with protein/carb/fat as befits your needs. If it's right for you to eat a certain amount protein at a certain time, eat the paleo stuff, so that you get quality protein and quality nutrition.

I'm not sure, if it is due to its relationship with cortisol it could be important. Other people suggest to eat within an hour. Possibly in metabolically sound people the timing doesn't matter, but people who are dysfunctional, leptin resistant, etc., it is probably more important. I'm with Dr Kruse on this topic.

So do you think the "within 30 minutes of waking" part matters, or is it it just superfluous complication of a simple concept (protein=fullness)?

Would this protein bar be ok (it says it has 32g of protein): http://images.vitaminimages.com/cdn/sd/pdf/W045891-AE.pdf Maybe I'm mixing concepts; I'm just now returning to paleo after 5 months off and gaining 10 pounds. Yes, I know real food is best, but I'm sure I could eat this within 30 minutes of waking, but not sure about steak or 4 eggs. Thx for any thoughts, Mike

I don't think an exact reason is agreed upon, but it almost definitely will keep you fuller throughout the day. Protein seems to affect hunger hormones, you may say it 'resets' things for your day.

Heather Leidy has published some great research on this and has more forthcoming. I saw her talk a conference last summer showing research where people snacked less even after dinner when consuming a high protein breakfast.

And it doesn't have to be just protein, protein+fat is fine and even having some carbs is okay but if you wanna stay full longer having more like 40-50g protein will be better.

For the record, in my experience, the 30g of protein within 30 minutes of waking up was effective in controlling my appetite.

I speculated about this in a recent question, I thought the logic behind it was to produce a more normal daily cortisol rhythm:

His purpose is appetite control. I followed the 4HB Slow Carb Diet and it worked. I didn't exactly put the time in to see what was baloney & what wasn't. I just followed his plan and lost fat quickly.
