Probiotics Questions

Answered on August 19, 2014

So i have a few questions about probiotics. Fist is when ordering online how stable are they? I know a lot now say they are stable without being refridgerated but is this true? If idealy they should be refridgerated it seems no one ships them this way. Will they still be good? Also i think they are a great supplement i tend to like to get between 20-50 billion a day i currently take the ultimate flora 50 billion. What brands and sites to you you trust when buying them online also i try to get the ones that are gluten and dairy free i try to stay as strict as possible when i can. Thanks in advance for everything

haha yeh i didn't mean little probiotic boxing match type kill but just that if one probiotic dominates the others might not be able to establish, and die or be 'killed off', and thus be ineffectual and a waste of money. But then again i am no expert in these matters, it just seemed like a possible scenario of introducing different types of probiotics.

Probiotics won't "kill each other off"- they will either colonize your intestine successfully and be compatible with your current gut conditions/micriobiota, or head out with the waste (the fate of most of them).

I'm not actually taking any probiotics so i cannot say. Right now I'm trying to source decent SB before I go overseas at the end of the month. I wonder if taking too many strains of probiotics would cause them to compete and maybe kill each other off?

i do remember him mentioning that one i forgot about it, do you find though that just taking 1 strain is just as good or beneficial then getting multiple strains?

The SB yeast one is meant to be very heat stable, they recommend it for travellers to keep in their first aid. The yeast thrive in warmer temperatures. I think it was mentioned in Robb Wolfs book, from memory.

Original L. Acidophilus is one of my favorite probiotics.

The cheapest place to get it is swansonvitamins.com

50 Billion is a good number to shoot for, as you can get a months supply of 50 billion capsules for around $40-$50. As for stability, most brands can survive for a week or two without being refrigerated, which is why you will see many suppliers not ship with ice or use next day delivery.

Adult Formula CP-1 is gluten and dairy free and is a very popular type of probiotics: http://www.customprobiotics.com/custom-probiotics-adult-formula-cp-1.htm

I use Now Foods Probiotic Defense. It does not have to be refrigerated, although I keep mine in the fridge anyway. The reason I buy from them is because they are one of the few supplement manufacturers that has received the good manufacturing practices certification, so I know they use quality ingredients and safe manufacturing practices to make their products. Their probiotics really work for me too.
