Question about Pregnancy - Cold/Flu?

Yesterday I found out that I am pregnant! I'm a little over four weeks along (going by last menstrual cycle), and the real kicker for making me think I was was the fact that I woke up feeling like I was coming down with the cold or flu. Headache, sore throat, cough, phlegm, drippy nose, inability to sleep, but oh so tired, sneezing, etc. Sleeping was a lost cause last night as I was waking up to blow my nose every 10 minutes. I had a 100.2 fever this morning. While I've been known to get sinus infections in the past, this level of illness is not normal for me, especially the fever.

Any other mamas experience early pregnancy symptoms like this? Any pieces of advice for getting through this? The hubs just brought me some coconut water for hydration and epsom salts for a bath later on. I've been taking tylenol but it has done zip for my headache, which has not relieved over the past 24 hours.

Congratulations!

It's easy to get sick in the first and third trimesters because your body is in an inflammatory state. Your immune system is busy right now making sure the embryo attaches to your vessels (which also creates a wound) to get the placenta formed along with blood and nutrient flow.

All that to say that whatever you can do to keep the inflammation down will help: stress reduction (meditation, calming music, aromatherapy), clean Paleo foods, and plenty of sleep. Your epsom salt baths will also be helpful, just be careful not to go too hot!

It's usually suggested that you drink more water than usual, about a gallon a day. I don't know if that's a proven thing, but it might help your headache to drink more. A few drops of liquid minerals can also help. A friend of mine is in her second trimester right now, and she has complained of headaches as well. Turned out she wasn't drinking much water. I drank a lot of sparkling mineral water to settle my stomach when I was pregnant, and I didn't have any issue with headaches.

So, a lot of R&R, strict Paleo, and hydration should help you feel better sooner rather than later. Good luck and hope you're feeling better soon!

Congrats!

Yes, as Liz points out, your immune system is suppressed during pregnancy to help your body to not reject your embryo/fetus.

Getting your Vitamin D3 level up can help you avoid getting sick. Here's a blog post with more info:

Wow your post just gave me hope! The last 2 days I've been feeling like I have the flu, but am also anxiously waiting... I am late, but also have a negative home test. Maybe there's hope!! Thanks!

I am five weeks into my third pregnancy. Cold-like symptoms are very common early signs. It doesn't necessarily mean your sick. Pregnancy does totally wacky things to your body, especially very early on. For example, I am normally VERY hot blooded. I'm always hot. Sometimes in the evenings, I step out onto our porch barefoot so the cement will cool my super hot feet. For the last two weeks, I've been literally freezing ALL the time. And I have periods of runny nose, constant sneezing, even the odd sinus headache. But I'm not ill. Just knocked up!!! ;)

Many, many congratulations!!!
